FMF Exhaust Mufflers for Honda CRF: Fit, Sound & Performance
Compare Powercore 4, Q4 and Factory 4.1 options, then match the exhaust to your CRF and complete setup.
← All CRF's Only Blog ArticlesA louder bike is not automatically a faster bike. The right FMF exhaust muffler for your Honda CRF starts with exact fitment, the sound characteristics you want and the components already installed. A Powercore 4, Q4 or Factory 4.1 name identifies a product family; the part number identifies the application and equipment you actually receive.
CRF's Only offers model-specific FMF options for mini bikes, larger trail-bike platforms and competition builds. Here is how to compare them without confusing a slip-on with a complete exhaust, or a spark arrestor with a quiet insert.
Fitment comes before finish or sound
Match the complete model designation and year. A CRF250F is different from a CRF250L or CRF250R; a CRF300F is different from a CRF300L. Likewise, CRF450L / CRF450RL, CRF450X and CRF450R/RX exhaust applications must be checked separately.
Generation changes matter on smaller bikes, too. The featured CRF110F products divide into 2013–2018 and 2019–2027 applications. Do not choose by engine size or canister appearance alone.
- Slip-on: replaces the muffler assembly and its supplied connecting section. It retains a compatible existing header; it does not automatically fit every stock or aftermarket header.
- Full system: includes the header and muffler as a matched package. Confirm the supplied hardware, seals and any additional installation items.
“Q4” names a muffler, while “MegaBomb” names a header. Our Q4 + MegaBomb package combines them into a full system. Buying a Q4 separately is a different purchase and requires its own header-compatibility check.
Which FMF muffler family fits your priorities?
| FMF family | Main emphasis | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Powercore 4 / Powercore 4 HEX | Performance-oriented options using aluminum and stainless-steel construction, including Mini Powercore applications. | Slip-on versus full system, spark-arrested versus non-spark-arrested version, and compatible quiet insert. |
| Q4 / Q4 HEX | Sound management through chambers, baffles and packing. | Exact header connection, supplied inserts and application-specific sound information. |
| Factory 4.1 RCT | Compact muffler design with Resonance Chamber Technology; materials vary by version. | Canister, midpipe and header materials separately, plus spark-arrestor and quiet-insert inclusion. |
The Q4 is worth comparing when sound control is a priority. The Factory 4.1 offers a different compact design and material choices. Neither family name establishes a horsepower increase, a measured sound level or fitment across all CRF models.
Check construction component by component. A titanium canister does not mean the entire system is titanium, and a carbon-fiber end cap does not mean the canister itself is carbon fiber.
Honda CRF FMF options at CRF's Only
These examples show why the exact application and selected version matter. Use each listing for current price and configuration.
CRF110F and CRF125F
- CRF110F 2013–2018 Powercore 4 full system: FMF 041502 includes a stainless-steel header and spark arrestor.
- CRF110F 2019–2027 Powercore 4 slip-on: FMF 041579 is the non-spark-arrested version. If you require a spark arrestor, ask us about the separate 041580 version before ordering.
- CRF125F 2019–2027 Powercore 4 slip-on: select 041581 for the non-spark-arrested version or 041582 for the spark-arrested version. Confirm exact Big Wheel fitment separately.
CRF250F and CRF300F
The CRF250F 2019–2025 Powercore 4 HEX and CRF300F 2026–2027 Powercore 4 HEX listings use FMF 041624. This slip-on includes a removable spark-arrestor screen; its quiet insert is sold separately. These are F-model applications, not CRF250L or CRF300L fitment.
CRF450L / CRF450RL
For the 2019–2027 CRF450L / CRF450RL, compare these complete exhaust packages:
- FMF Q4 + MegaBomb full exhaust system for the Q4's sound-control emphasis.
- FMF Factory 4.1 + MegaBomb full exhaust system with the blue-anodized titanium-canister muffler and carbon end cap.
Want engine management in the same purchase? Choose the Vortex X10 ECU + FMF Q4/MegaBomb combo or Vortex X10 ECU + FMF Factory 4.1 combo. Optional intake, block-off and handlebar-switch selections are separate from the base package.

Sound control and spark arresting are different functions
A quiet insert manages exhaust sound. A spark arrestor addresses hot particles leaving the exhaust. Some products combine functions in one assembly; others use separate parts. An insert that fits the outlet is not automatically an approved spark arrestor or the correct sound-control part.
For example, the Q4 HEX 041578 includes a spark-arrestor screen and quiet insert. The Factory 4.1 RCT 041587 includes a screen, while its quiet insert is a separate purchase. Powercore 4 equipment varies, as the CRF110F and CRF125F examples above demonstrate.
Do not treat “93 dB,” “94 dB” or “96 dB” product wording as a guaranteed result on your bike. The test method, installed header, insert configuration and packing condition matter. Confirm the competition venue's test requirements and have the finished motorcycle tested when required.
A Q4's sound-control focus also does not mean it will be quieter than the original Honda exhaust. Choose from verified configuration details rather than recorded exhaust clips, which cannot establish a comparable measured sound level.
Evaluate power, weight and fueling together
An exhaust change can alter how the engine delivers power, but added volume is not proof of added horsepower. Look for testing that identifies the exact bike, engine, intake, header, muffler, inserts and fueling. A result from another CRF, or from an exhaust-and-ECU package, does not isolate the gain from a muffler alone.
Compare equivalent weights. For the CRF450L / CRF450RL Q4 + MegaBomb full system, CRF's Only confirms 8 lb versus 16 lb for the complete stock exhaust: an 8 lb, or 50%, exhaust-system reduction. That is not the weight saving from every FMF slip-on, nor a 50% reduction in motorcycle weight.
Does an exhaust upgrade require an ECU?
On a stock-engine CRF450L / CRF450RL with our featured FMF full systems, the stock ECU is acceptable. CRF's Only highly recommends the Vortex X10 ECU to match fuel and ignition control to the performance setup. Additional intake or internal engine modifications should be included in the setup discussion.
If you upgrade in stages, the Vortex supplied by CRF's Only comes pre-programmed with a map designed specifically for the stock exhaust. When fitting the FMF system, use the supplied map sheet to select the appropriate configuration.
That recommendation is specific to this application. Carbureted CRFs require a jetting review appropriate to their configuration; EFI models require their own fueling assessment. Do not assume that a recommendation for the CRF450L / CRF450RL applies to every Honda CRF.
Install correctly and keep the packing serviced
Use the instructions for the exact FMF part and Honda service information for your bike. Begin with a cool exhaust and a securely supported motorcycle.
- Check the parts before fitting. Confirm the header connection, required gasket or sleeve, mounting hardware and insert configuration.
- Align before tightening. Fit the assembly without forcing its mounts, then use the specified tightening order and torque values.
- Check heat clearance. Inspect the surrounding plastics, hoses, wiring and riding-gear contact areas.
- Complete the operating checks. Check for leaks, verify idle and recheck hardware as instructed after cooling. Run the engine outdoors.
For a CRF450L / CRF450RL Vortex installation, TPS calibration is unnecessary if the TPS remains in its stock position. Always check idle after a modification and adjust as needed.
Muffler packing is a service item. Deteriorated or saturated packing can increase sound and affect performance. Follow the service interval and packing specification for the actual muffler; a single interval does not cover every FMF design or riding condition.
Service the spark arrestor as directed, inspect mounting points and joints, and protect the outlet from water during washing. Do not assume an internal arrestor and a removable screen use the same cleaning procedure.
Contact CRF's Only with your model, year, existing header, engine and intake changes, and intended competition use. We can help match the muffler, necessary hardware and fueling plan before you order.
FMF exhaust muffler FAQ
Will any FMF slip-on fit my stock header?
No. Verify the exact motorcycle, year and header connection. “Slip-on” describes the type of replacement, not universal compatibility.
Is a Q4 muffler the same as a Q4 + MegaBomb system?
No. Q4 identifies the muffler. The Q4 + MegaBomb package adds the matched header to make a full exhaust system.
Does every Powercore 4 include a spark arrestor?
No. Equipment varies by part number. The CRF125F listing offers separate non-spark-arrested and spark-arrested versions; select the configuration you need.
Will the Q4 pass every sound test?
No universal result is guaranteed. Verify the complete configuration, maintain the packing and inserts, and follow the venue's test procedure.
Do I need a Vortex with the CRF450L / CRF450RL FMF full system?
The stock ECU is acceptable on a stock-engine bike with the featured systems. CRF's Only highly recommends the Vortex; review any additional modifications before choosing the setup.
How often should I repack my FMF muffler?
Follow the instructions for the specific muffler and adjust maintenance to use and condition. Increased noise, deteriorated packing or water saturation calls for inspection rather than waiting for a universal mileage interval.
