CRF450L / CRF450RL FMF Exhaust Guide: Q4 vs. Factory 4.1
Compare FMF's two full-system options, understand their sound-control features and choose an ECU plan for your competition build.
← All CRF's Only Blog ArticlesFor the CRF450L / CRF450RL 2019–2027, CRF's Only offers two FMF full exhaust configurations: the Q4 Hex with MegaBomb header and the Factory 4.1 RCT with MegaBomb header. Both are available as exhaust-only purchases or paired with a Vortex X10 ECU.
The Q4 emphasizes sound control. The Factory 4.1 offers a compact muffler with a blue-anodized titanium canister and carbon-fiber end cap. Start with the features you want, then decide whether to retain your current engine management or buy the exhaust and ECU together.
Two practical facts apply to both complete systems: the FMF exhaust weighs 8 lb versus the stock system's 16 lb, and the stock ECU is acceptable on a stock-engine bike, although CRF's Only highly recommends the Vortex ECU.
Q4 versus Factory 4.1
The muffler is the main choice between these packages. Both use the 041577 stainless-steel MegaBomb header. Q4 and MegaBomb name different components: the muffler and header work together to form the complete system.
| Feature | Q4 + MegaBomb | Factory 4.1 + MegaBomb |
|---|---|---|
| Muffler | Q4 Hex, 041578 | Factory 4.1 RCT, 041587 |
| Design emphasis | Sound control through chambers, baffles and packing | Compact layout with Resonance Chamber Technology |
| Canister | Aluminum | Blue-anodized titanium |
| Midpipe / end cap | Stainless steel / stainless steel | Stainless steel / carbon fiber |
| MegaBomb header | Stainless steel, 041577 | Stainless steel, 041577 |
| Spark-arrestor screen | Included | Included |
| Quiet insert | Included | Sold separately |
Choose the Q4 when sound control is a priority
The Q4 uses internal chambers, baffles and multistage packing to manage exhaust sound. It is the FMF option to consider when controlling noise is central to your competition setup. Keep its packing and screen maintained to preserve that function.
Choose the Factory 4.1 for its compact muffler design
The Factory 4.1 RCT combines a shorter canister layout with FMF's Resonance Chamber Technology and Rapid Tuning System. Its titanium canister and carbon end cap distinguish it from the Q4, while the supplied midpipe and MegaBomb header remain stainless steel.
Compare sound and power with the complete setup in mind
The Factory 4.1's optional insert is marketed as a 94 dB insert, but that name is not a measured sound result for every motorcycle. Venue testing, packing condition and installed components all matter. Likewise, the Q4's sound-control focus does not establish that it is quieter than the original Honda exhaust.
For power comparisons, look for testing that identifies the motorcycle, ECU, intake, exhaust and installed insert. A change measured on a different CRF model or with several parts changed together cannot isolate what the exhaust alone will do on your bike.
Complete-system weight savings
CRF's Only confirms these weights for the complete exhaust systems used in this comparison:
| Complete exhaust | Weight | Savings versus stock |
|---|---|---|
| Stock Honda system | 16 lb | Baseline |
| FMF Q4 + MegaBomb | 8 lb | 8 lb / 50% |
| FMF Factory 4.1 + MegaBomb | 8 lb | 8 lb / 50% |
Each FMF option removes 8 lb compared with the complete stock exhaust. The 50% reduction refers to exhaust-system weight, not total motorcycle weight. These figures describe the exhaust replacement itself; adding an ECU is a separate part of the build.
Stock ECU or Vortex?
The stock ECU is acceptable on a stock-engine CRF450L / CRF450RL with either of these FMF full systems. You can buy the exhaust without purchasing a replacement ECU at the same time. Include any intake or internal engine changes when asking for advice, because the full configuration matters.
CRF's Only highly recommends the Vortex X10 ECU with either FMF system. It controls fuel delivery and ignition timing, with pre-programmed maps for supported exhaust configurations. It gives you a way to match engine management to the installed hardware and intended power delivery.
Use the map sheet supplied with your ECU to identify the correct FMF setting and starting fuel trims. Identify the muffler, header, intake and installed insert rather than selecting a map from the exhaust brand alone. The low-, mid- and high-throttle fuel trims are not three simple rpm zones.
If you are upgrading in stages, the Vortex supplied by CRF's Only comes pre-programmed with a map designed specifically for the stock exhaust. Review the map selection when you install the FMF system later.
Read our Vortex X10 features and setup guide for the controls and map-selection details, or our ECU-before-exhaust guide to plan a staged build.
Exhaust-only and combo options
Choose the exhaust configuration first, then decide whether you also want a Vortex. Both muffler choices are available through either purchase path:
- Q4 + MegaBomb full exhaust: the complete exhaust without an ECU.
- Q4 + MegaBomb with Vortex X10: the same exhaust configuration paired with the application-specific ECU.
- Factory 4.1 + MegaBomb full exhaust: the complete exhaust without an ECU.
- Factory 4.1 + MegaBomb with Vortex X10: the full system and ECU purchased together.
The Vortex handlebar map switch, Twin Air PowerFlow kit and Graves block-off plate are optional selections on the combo pages. Add them only if they belong in your build plan; they are not automatically included with the base exhaust-and-ECU package.
Already own a compatible Vortex? The exhaust-only path avoids buying a second ECU, but review the programming and supplied map sheet for your new system. Vortex ECUs are not eligible for return, exchange or cancellation once shipped, so settle configuration questions with us before ordering.

Installation and maintenance
Use the instructions supplied for your components and the Honda service information for your motorcycle. These packages replace both header and muffler; buying one component separately calls for its own compatibility check.
- Start with a cool exhaust. Support the bike securely, retain the original hardware and inspect the exhaust-port gasket. Replace a damaged gasket.
- Align before tightening. Position the header and muffler without forcing the mounts, then follow the specified tightening sequence and torque values.
- Check heat clearance. Inspect space around the plastics, suspension, wiring, hoses and riding gear. Use a shield matched to the MegaBomb header if additional contact protection is needed.
- Complete the setup checks. Check for leaks and recheck hardware after cooling. If installing a Vortex, TPS calibration is unnecessary when the sensor remains in its stock position. Always check idle after any modification and adjust as needed.
FMF's Q4 instructions recommend repacking after 20–30 hours of normal use with proper fueling and cleaning the spark-arrestor screen about every 30 hours. Follow the service instructions for the actual muffler fitted. Clean the cooled exterior with mild soap and water, protect the outlet during washing and replace packing that becomes saturated.
Record service hours and investigate new rattles, leaks or increased noise. Keeping the packing, screen and mounts in good condition is part of owning a serviceable performance exhaust.
Frequently asked questions
Do both FMF systems fit the CRF450L / CRF450RL?
Yes. The complete systems sold by CRF's Only cover the 2019–2027 model family. Select the CRF450L / CRF450RL application and your model year when ordering.
Is the Q4 a muffler or a complete exhaust?
Q4 names the muffler. Our Q4 + MegaBomb package includes that muffler and the MegaBomb header, making it a full exhaust system.
Is a Vortex ECU required?
No. On a stock-engine bike, the stock ECU is acceptable with either reviewed FMF full system. CRF's Only highly recommends the Vortex for its application-specific fuel and ignition mapping.
Is the Factory 4.1 full system all titanium?
No. This configuration has a titanium canister, stainless-steel midpipe and MegaBomb header, and a carbon-fiber end cap.
Do both systems include a spark arrestor?
Yes. Both include a spark-arrestor screen. The Q4 also includes its quiet insert; the Factory 4.1 quiet insert is sold separately. A sound-control insert and a spark arrestor have different functions.
Will the Q4 meet every sound limit?
No universal sound-test result is guaranteed. Check the rules and test procedure for your competition venue and maintain the muffler's packing and installed components.
Can I use these systems on public roads with the stock ECU?
No. They are sold for closed-course competition only. Keeping the stock ECU or fitting a spark arrestor does not make the exhaust street legal.
