Honda CRF Radiator Guards: Fitment & Protection Guide
Match radiator protection to your exact Honda CRF, compare Bullet Proof Designs and Flatland options, and check the details that matter before installation.
← All CRF's Only Blog ArticlesA damaged radiator can end a ride even when the engine and suspension are otherwise ready to go. A well-chosen Honda CRF radiator guard adds protection around a vulnerable component, but the right choice depends on more than the Honda badge. Model year, radiator shape, mounting points and existing accessories all matter.
CRF's Only offers model-specific options from Bullet Proof Designs and Flatland Racing. This guide connects those products to their applications and explains what to check around larger fuel tanks, fan kits and aftermarket radiators.
Understand the protection you are buying
A radiator face guard places a barrier ahead of exposed fins and tubes. A brace adds support intended to resist deformation from impacts or a fall. Some products combine frontal coverage with side or lower support; others concentrate on one area.
Compare the actual shape and mounting arrangement. A small stone striking the front and a rock pressing into the side of the bike load the radiator differently. Neither a material name nor the word “guard” tells you everything about the coverage.
Find the right guard for your Honda CRF
Use your exact model and year to select an application, then review its installation notes. These are selected options from CRF's Only; they are not interchangeable across every CRF model.
| Motorcycle | Listed years | Product | Key detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| CRF450R / CRF450RX | 2021–2026 | Bullet Proof Designs HON-RG-22 | Billet-aluminum guards; confirm your complete accessory setup. |
| CRF250R / CRF250RX | 2022–2027 | Bullet Proof Designs HON-RG-22 | Use the CRF250R/RX listing for the current 2027 application. |
| CRF450L / CRF450RL | 2019–2027 | Flatland Racing 12-72 | Pair of aluminum guards with mounting hardware. |
| CRF300L | 2021–2027 | Flatland Racing 12-79 | Standard-model application; check the bracket version for a larger tank. |
| CRF300L Rally | 2021–2027 | Flatland Racing 12-78 | Rally-specific application; aftermarket tanks may be incompatible. |
Bullet Proof Designs also lists 2021–2026 CRF450RWE compatibility for HON-RG-22. Its own product page currently lists the CRF250R/RX application through 2026; the CRF's Only listing above extends that application through 2027.
For older bikes or other CRF models, send us the full model designation and year. An application that does not cover your bike is not evidence that no radiator protection exists for it.
Compare construction, coverage and mounting
Bullet Proof Designs billet guards
The HON-RG-22 guards are machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum. The design uses a vented guard on each side with supporting brackets and hardware. “Billet” describes machining from solid stock; the finished shape and mounting arrangement determine how that material is used.
Bullet Proof Designs makes these guards in the USA. Its original-owner lifetime warranty covers qualifying bending or breakage of its guards while mounted. Proof of purchase is required; shipping, handling and anodizing are excluded. Review the current terms, including exclusions for blemished or scratch-and-dent products.
Flatland Racing aluminum guards
Flatland uses aluminum guard structures with reinforcing mounts or braces that vary by application. The CRF450L / CRF450RL 12-72 set, for example, has rear mounting support and includes both sides. The standard CRF300L and Rally use different part numbers and mounting arrangements.
Do not assume the billet construction, bracket layout or warranty of a Bullet Proof Designs guard applies to a Flatland product. Compare each exact product's coverage, supports and installation requirements.
Material alone is not a protection rating. Consider how the guard supports the radiator, where an impact could reach it and whether the mounts remain accessible for inspection. Avoid choosing solely by thickness, appearance or an unsupported claim that one design cannot bend.
Check tanks, fans and aftermarket radiators together
Bullet Proof Designs describes HON-RG-22 as compatible with oversized fuel tanks and fan kits. That statement belongs to this specific guard. It is not a universal compatibility claim for every Honda CRF guard, tank, fan or custom installation.
For the standard CRF300L Flatland 12-79, the current listing describes an updated bracket for larger fuel tanks. If you already own an older guard, identify its bracket before adding a tank. The Rally 12-78 has a separate aftermarket-tank warning; do not transfer the standard-model bracket information to it.
Before ordering, check these four combinations:
- Guard and fuel tank: tank shape, radiator-shroud attachment and bracket clearance.
- Guard and fan: fan body, wiring route and blade clearance, if a fan is fitted.
- Guard and radiator: radiator dimensions and mount locations, especially with oversized or replacement units.
- Guard and other protection: shared mounting points and clearance around existing braces or crash bars.
Two accessories can each fit a stock motorcycle and still interfere when installed together. Photos, brand names and part numbers help us check the combination before you start taking the bike apart.
Install carefully and preserve the airflow path
Use the instructions for the exact guard and your motorcycle's service guidance. Brackets, spacers, reused hardware and tightening sequences vary; there is no universal radiator-guard torque setting.
- Start with a cool, securely supported bike. Never open a hot radiator cap. Switch the bike off and follow the applicable electrical-isolation procedure before working near a fan.
- Inspect before covering. Look for leaks, bent mounting points, damaged tubes and existing shroud interference. A guard should not be used to force a damaged radiator back into alignment.
- Identify the hardware. Follow the instructions for brackets, spacers and any original parts that must remain in place.
- Start bolts by hand and align the assembly. If a bolt binds or a bracket will not sit correctly, stop and verify the installation rather than forcing it.
- Check unintended contact. Keep the guard from pressing into fins, tubes, hoses, wiring or fan blades. Designed mounting contact is different from a guard rubbing against the cooling core.
- Tighten as specified and recheck. Confirm shroud fit, hose routing and airflow openings. Verify fan clearance and operation using the appropriate procedure, keeping hands and tools away from an energized fan.
Vents provide openings for air; they do not guarantee unchanged airflow in every condition. Mud, leaves and bent components can obstruct the path through the radiator. Clear debris using the cleaning method in your motorcycle's guidance, and avoid damaging the fins.
Inspect after a fall or hard impact
Check the guard, radiator mounts, hoses and cooling core for deformation, fresh contact marks or coolant leakage. Reinspect fasteners after the first ride as directed by the guard manufacturer. Resolve leaks, interference or overheating before continuing to ride.

Honda CRF radiator guard FAQ
Will one radiator guard fit every Honda CRF?
No. Use the exact model, year and part number. Even the CRF300L and CRF300L Rally use different Flatland applications.
Are radiator guards and radiator braces the same?
The terms can overlap. Face coverage helps shield the cooling core, while braces add structural support. Review the specific design to see which functions it provides.
Will a radiator guard make my bike run cooler?
Do not buy one as a guaranteed cooling upgrade. Its main job is protection. Keep vents and the radiator clear, and maintain the cooling system.
Can I use a guard with a larger tank or fan kit?
Often, but compatibility is product-specific. Confirm the guard, tank and fan combination, including any required brackets. Aftermarket radiators also need a separate fitment check.
Do all radiator guards have a lifetime warranty?
No. Bullet Proof Designs publishes an original-owner lifetime warranty with conditions and exclusions. Do not apply that warranty to another manufacturer's product.
How much do Honda CRF radiator guards cost?
Price depends on the application, construction, finish and whether the listing includes one guard or a pair. Use the linked product pages for current pricing and compare the complete kit before ordering.
