A great CRF250R setup starts with the right generation.

The CRF250R is Honda's liquid-cooled 250-class motocross four-stroke. Its name has stayed familiar, but its engine, fueling, starting system, suspension and chassis have changed substantially since 2004. A part that fits one generation can be completely wrong for another.

2027 fitment is included: CRF's Only has confirmed carryover from the 2026 CRF250R. Match every part to its listed model-year range and the equipment on your motorcycle, especially if a previous owner has changed the engine, forks, wheels or exhaust.

CRF250R, RX, Works Edition and CRF250F are different applications

The R is the motocross bike, the RX is the cross-country version and the RWE / HRC Works Edition has its own equipment. The air-cooled CRF250F is a separate trail platform. Shared displacement or similar plastics do not establish compatibility; order by the complete model designation and year.

The current stock chain reference is 114 links with 13/50 gearing. A different sprocket combination can require a different length. Earlier spark plugs and oil capacities also differ, so use the Honda manual for your exact year rather than applying these numbers to every CRF250R.

For 2004–2009, start with the carburetor and jetting. Later bikes use EFI; choose year-specific fuel and ignition control, or a matched exhaust-and-ECU package for a planned race build.

These are competition-service references, not a substitute for the complete 2027 Honda Competition Handbook (maintenance table 2-10). Honda also calls for oil, oil-filter and fork-oil replacement plus valve inspection after the first break-in ride. Use the 2026 handbook for that year. Shorten service intervals for severe use; follow the full inspection, torque and level-check procedures.

This guide covers U.S.-market Honda CRF250R models from 2004 through 2027. CRF’s Only has confirmed 2026-to-2027 carryover. Use each product’s exact application range when ordering.

Is the 2027 CRF250R a carryover for parts?

CRF’s Only has confirmed carryover from 2026 to 2027 for the CRF250R. This extends the relevant 2026 parts application; it does not make older generations, the CRF250RX or the CRF250RWE interchangeable with every current part.

When did the CRF250R get fuel injection?

The CRF250R changed from a carburetor to fuel injection for 2010. The 2004–2009 bikes use carburetor jetting and service parts; 2010-and-later bikes require year-specific EFI components and calibration.

When did the CRF250R get electric start and a DOHC engine?

Both arrived with the 2018 redesign. The earlier CRF250R uses a Unicam engine and kickstarter. Confirm the exact engine and electronics application before ordering ignition, ECU or internal engine parts.

Is the CRF250R the same as a CRF250F or CRF250RX?

No. The CRF250F is an air-cooled trail bike. The CRF250RX is a cross-country model with its own setup and equipment. The CRF250R is the motocross model. Shared parts must explicitly list the relevant model and year.

Does this guide cover the CRF250RWE or HRC Works Edition?

What are the stock CRF250R tire sizes?

The standard U.S. 2026–2027 CRF250R uses an 80/100-21 front and 100/90-19 rear. Check your year and the rim and tire currently installed, especially on a used bike or one with a wheel conversion.

What are the stock sprockets and chain?

For the standard 2026–2027 CRF250R, Honda lists 13 teeth front, 50 rear and a #520 chain with 114 links. Earlier ratios can differ. A change in tooth count can also change the chain length and adjustment range you need.

Which spark plug does the CRF250R use?

The standard 2026–2027 reference is NGK SILMAR9A-9S, with a non-adjustable 0.8–0.9mm gap. Earlier models can use different plugs and gaps. Check the Honda manual for your year before substituting a plug.

How much oil does the CRF250R take?

The standard 2026–2027 reference is 1.08L / 1.14 US qt with a filter change, or 1.05L / 1.11 US qt after draining only. Use Honda’s level-check procedure. Older engines can have separate engine and transmission fills and different capacities.

Honda changed engine architecture, frames, bodywork, intake systems, exhausts and suspension at different times. A chain or oil filter may span many years while an ECU, skid plate or exhaust fits only a smaller group. The part’s specific application matters more than the broad generation label.

Can I put fork springs in every CRF250R fork?

No. Identify the fork fitted to the motorcycle first. The stock 2015–2017 Showa SFF-TAC system uses air-spring adjustment and differs from coil-spring forks. An older bike may also have a fork conversion or swap.

Do I need an ECU when I change the exhaust?

Check the requirements of the exhaust and ECU for your exact year and engine configuration. Some combinations call for matched calibration. Do not assume a map for another year, muffler or engine build will suit your motorcycle. Carbureted 2004–2009 models need jetting considerations instead.

Will a bigger rear sprocket help?

With the front sprocket unchanged, more rear teeth shorten the overall gearing. This can help the bike pull a particular corner or section, while increasing engine rpm at a given speed. Check chain length, guide clearance and adjustment range before ordering.

What should I check before buying a used CRF250R?

Confirm the VIN and model year, request a cold start and review engine-hour and service records.
