CRF250X'04-17 - Devol Radiator Guards

See my review of the Mohard guards, for some real guards!

I got these because my radiators were perfect, still mint from the factory, and I wanted them to stay that way. These guards were not the answer! Not the greatest or easiest mounting system/hardware, but workable. I finally laid the bike down for the first time yesterday, and they did not do their job--AT ALL! I gently laid the bike down in soft, smooth dirt at low speed. There was no big rock, stump, or anything. In fact, there was nothing but dirt--about as good as conditions can be for laying down your bike. It was a silly washout while looking backward. :P I never even expected this was a condition where my guards would need to come into play. I barely put some scuffs on the plastic. :( It was such a minor incident that I didn't even think to check the radiator. I was looking over my bike today for other reasons and I noticed the guard didn't look straight, so I looked closer. The guard was folded down the middle (vertically) and had folded right into the radiator and crunched it. :O Now that I know these guards don't do anything, I'm going to write the company and start looking for a better product. These are coming off as soon as I find something else. I'm actually going to look at the products in person this time because now I know what to look for: some sort of lateral bracing and rigidity. These don't provide much at all. I think they will crush from pressure on the side almost as easily as the radiators themselves, because there is no bracing in that direction. There is only bracing front to back with these. Even the front to back bracing is questionable from the moment you install them because the brace has a long slot where it bolts to the frame instead of a precisely aligned hole, so the brace can slide in the slot upon impact. I doubt Devol will give me my money back and I don't think they have a better product, so I guess all I got for $95 is a lesson learned. Do yourself a favor and look for braces that have a solid front to back brace with precise holes (not long slots--in other words, a precise, custom fit), and for goodness sakes, some LATERAL BRACING. Where do you think most of the impacts are going to come from? The side! You need bracing for side impacts! I guess Devol didn't figure that one out. I didn't think about it until it was too late. Argh.

Installation manula looks as if it has been copied 50 times and the photos are not readable and the text is almost unreadable. Verbiage seems to be a poor Asian translation. Guards are thin, cheap and the mounting points are weak. The Dollar General usually has higher quality products! Mounting method is cheesy as well. Emailed Devol w/ no response. Imagine that! Wasted my money. Ordered some Flatlands. Let's see how they are.

I have not been happy with these gaurds either. i only had one layover and crunched my left radiator. im going to try the flatland racing gaurds. they look much stronger

These guards only help with bushes. My radiator got squished. It didn't help at all with my simple tip over in the wash. I don't recommend getting these.

Love these guards!. They went on easily with all bolts lining up correctly. The ribs on the inside of the shrouds had to be trimmed a litttle but otherwise the fit and finish is very good. They have already paid for themselves as I have fallen directly on the radiators twice with no damage at all.
