    sqealing noise up front?

    by Mirageags » Sun Oct 10, 2010 4:37 pm

what could cuase a sqealing noise up front? it sounds like its coming from the front wheel area to me. brakes looked just fine no binding. not sure on hours but its 1500 miles or so 07 250x. i can hear it going faster barely, it sounds like a constant sqealing, then when i get slower it sounds like a squeak squeak squeak noise. and it doesnt do it all the time. off and on. any leads?

Bent front brake rotor. Roll your front wheel slowly while on a stand until you find the area that's slightly bent. Take large crescent and work it back straight slowly but surely til squeak is gone. Make sure pads are also clear of any dirt or debris, clean with brake part cleaner if needed.

I just had the same issue with my bike. Thought is was front brake tried different shoes ,bleed the system, Finally it ended up being my odometer drive was dry. Take it apart and grease and you should be golden.

you know, that was exactly what my brother suggested, lube the odometer. becuase i dont think anything is wrong with the rotor, i thought i spun it on the stand and it was fine but ill check again.
is the drive pretty easy to take apart? i dont have a shop manual (yet)

+1 -when mine squeaked it was only after riding and usually I only heard while decellerating.

correct, i hear it mostly on decelleration, sometimes its enough where i can hear it kind of whistling while going fast but its really faint.
ill have to get that done this weekend for sure. and then blast through my new singletrack to "make sure its ok" :D

okay all that greasing and taking apart and still did not help the issue. i can always hear it when i come down to a stop. sometimes i even think its coming from the engine.

Re-assemble per the manual. It is critical to set the axle and it very well could be the source of your noise.

I had something similar on my X model where I initially thought it was the wheel bearings so replaced them - without any change. Eventually tracked it back to being the odometer. I'd put the wheel back on without aligning the lugs on the odometer drive to the indents on the hub properly and taken it for a ride. That wore a channel across the lugs and the squealing noise (which was worse at slow speed) was the hub rubbing over the odometer drive.

i am pretty sure everything was lined up perfect. i made sure the wheel spun very freely with no sound (it was better after i greased) and i noticed at the last ride i did i did not hear the noise at all this time. very very strange. and im really confused. over the winter i may take it all apart and replace the bearings or grease them as well.
