Is the 150 F the right bike?

    by DocCRF-X250 » Wed Mar 31, 2010 4:33 pm

My son is 13, a couple of years ago I bought him a crf 70 f to see how he liked to go riding( since I have a crf-x 250). He loved it and since then he has shot up. He is now 5' 4" and around 100 lbs. I have been looking for a bike for him and I am thinking the crf150f is the right bike, not so much for power but for size. I have also thought about a 125 2-stroke or even a cr 85r but I think he would be better on the 150f. Just wondering what everyone thought? Thanks. Also what is a good price on a 2004-2007 crf150f? I live in ontario canada.

You're not really giving us much to go on other than size and weight. Do you ride trail or track? What surface, etc....

My wife is 5'4" also and her 150f fits her just fine. The 150f is 236 lbs wet, so you'd have to determine if it's too heavy for your son. My wife struggles to pick hers up, but to her credit she always tries first and usually gets it before asking for assistance.

The 2 strokers will probably be lighter, and maybe taller if they're true motocross bikes and will likely have more instantaneous power and speed than the 150f. The 150f is smooth as silk and feels light and maneuverable on the trails in comparison to my 230f.

You can use www.craigzoom.com to look around the area for what bikes are going for. I'm assuming that craigzoom works in canada, but don't know that for sure.

As for what to pay for a bike, I like to use Kelly Blue book (www.kbb.com) and look at the retail and trade-in values and pay something close to the middle of the 2 values depending upon condition of the bike. I find that a lot of people are asking a lot more $ than kbb says the bikes are worth. Again, I'm assuming that Kelly Blue Book is relevant in Canada.

Hope this helps just a little...

He rides on the track mostly but as well he will ride around our property. As for the weight of the bike ( to pick up) that is something I have not thought about although he is a strong atheletic 13 year old. My problem between 2 or 4 stroke is that like you said the 4 stroke is alot smoother and with learning to ride with a clutch I thought it would be more forgiving?

why not get the best of both worlds and take a look at the 150r? at 13 he will quickly out grow the 150f, and 236 pounds thats alot of bike, are we sure thats the weight cuz that is about the same as the 450r!!! anyway my opinion is the 150r it can do everything on the track and will also do well off road. I rode haley the wonder girls 150r a while back its a very fun bike :D you could pick up an 07 for between 1500 and 2000.

Given what you've said about the track, I would agree with bamm. The 150r is a very fun and powerful bike. I would estimate it at about 3-4 times more powerful than my 230f.

The one I rode last year, I could lift the front wheel with the throttle alone in the first 4 gears (never made it to 5th).

It is more maintenance than the F models, but if you've got a 250x, then you know what you're getting into.

As far as learning the clutch, as his right leg gets tired from kicking it, his clutch skills will improve exponentially.

And according to the Honda website, the 150f wet is 236 lbs.
Curb Weight 236 pounds (Includes all standard equipment, required fluids and full tank of fuel—ready to ride)

The 150r is listed as Curb Weight 183 pounds
