    CRF 150R Swingarm Recall

    by Asmith » Mon Nov 03, 2008 7:15 am

Thanks to BretSV for posting this info.

Honda released yesterday that there officially is a recall on some CRF150R/B swing arms. Letters are on the way explaining it to all customers, but I will copy the important bits of information here.

What is the reason for this recall? A defect may exist in the weld on the right side of the swingarm on some 2007 and 2008 Honda CRF150R, small and large wheel versions. Under certain riding conditions, the weld could crack and the swingarm could fail.

What should you do? This is a stop sale recall, meaning dealerships may not sell affected units until after the recall has been performed. Honda recommends you do not ride your bike if it is affected until the recall has been performed. If you must ride before the swingarm is replaced, inspect the right side weld(the one an inch or so behind your rear brake master cylinder) and avoid large jumps and impacts. If there is any evidence of a crack DO NOT RIDE.

What is the fix? The fix is to replace the entire swingarm. Replacement swingarms for the Big Wheel versions will begin to ship during mid November 2008 to dealers, the number of initial shipments will be based on the individual dealer's current inventory and past sales history. For the small wheel version swingarms will begin to ship in January 2009. The repair is free of charge.

How do I know if my 150 is affected? If your unit's VIN falls into this range it is part of this recall.

Just went and checked my # and thats a little scary. Probably good thing I didn't know this yesterday racing motocross, it could have seriously affected my lap times. "avoid jumping" oh my goodness. Definitely wouldn't have wanted to know that yesterday.

They are replacing the whole swingarm.

Honda recommends that you don't ride it.(Lawyerspeak...)

Inspect the right side weld(the one an inch or so behind your rear brake master cylinder) and avoid large jumps and impacts. If there is any evidence of a crack DO NOT RIDE.

You can expect the new swingarm will be better than the original. Mine is not cracked now. We were deciding against MX or Hare Scrambling this weekend. The swingarm issue turned us toward Hare Scrambling, but we aren't going to stop racing completely.

When they replace the swingarm, I assume the factory swingarm bearing will be used in the new swingarm. I would like to put new bearings in the swingarm when they do the replacement. Should I order new bearings now and have them available to put in when they change the swingarm? What is everyone else going to do?

Yay! Mines on the recall! Why so happy you ask?

Cause I get a new swinger (no scratches!) and I'm not using the 150R that much at all anymore. SWEET.

I haven't gotten any news from Honda though. :?
