Answers to the 450X oil questions

    by JAWS » Fri Apr 20, 2007 2:47 pm

Which oil and how much is a constant question asked in forums. The answers are many and varied.
For the CRF450X the answer is in the manual that comes from Honda:

    Engine:
Pro Honda GN4, HP4 or HP4M with molybdenum or equivalent
0.74 US qt (0.70 liter) with filter change
0.71 US qt (0.67 liter) without filter change

    Transmission:
Pro Honda HP trans oil. Pro Honda GN4 or HP4 without moly or equivalent
    0.69US qt (0.65 liter)

The riders here do deviate from this above procedure in the following ways:
1.We suggest that you run a full quart in the transmission. This is because there have been some failures in the tranny with sustained high speeds using the standard amount. There have not been any incidents reported so far using the full quart.

    2. The list below in alphabetical order are some of the oils that riders have chosen to use other than Honda oil

    Engine:
    Amsoil 10w-40
    Maxima Extra Synthetic (Maxum4 Extra)
    Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40

    Trannny:
    Amsoil 10w-40
    Delo 400
    Maxima MTL 80W
    Motul Trans Oil 10w-40
    Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40

The caveat is that if you choose to run any of the non-Honda recommended oils, you do so at your own risk.
Do not run any synthetic oil for break in. Put about 200 miles on the engine before switching.

Some keys to engine longevity are:
    1. Check and change your oil and filter often. The frequency is up to you.
    2. Clean your air filter regularly and make certain that it is oiled and the rim is greased to make a good seal.
    3. Insure that the air filter is seated properly.

I have done some research and Mobil MX4T 10-40 and 15-50 V-twin formulas (full synthetic) are also excellent oils, I use them frequently, better yet they are available at Chief auto parts stores at 6.99-7.99 a qt.
Here is oil comparison done by Amsoil(surprise they win!) on some different MC oils, Maxima Red label extra 100% ester is not included I wonder how it would have done, its the other oil I use top notch stuff.

Does anyone here have an opinion about which rad guard to use?
Also, my bike seems to be a bit lean... Its totally stock, is there anything I should do?

    Sorry couldn't resist guys.

Important tidbit: If using a rekluse, they recommend Rotella NON synthetic, the white bottle. Available at most walmarts. I use synth in the engine side..

i run Castrol GTX 10W-30 in my 230F, seems to do ok for me. but i don't know about the bigger, pressure-lubed bikes, with seperate engine and transmission oil cases.

I sure give Jaws an A for effort, and how I wish it would work ! What I think is funny is how many just don't believe that The Pro Honda HP red bottle stuff is listed righ there in their owners manual

How about Maxima 4 Premium 10w40w in the engine and MTL85 in the tranny? instead of Synthectic?
