New 2017 Rally rider on the forum

    by HeidiHo » Wed May 03, 2017 3:45 pm

Just thought I would "check-in" with the masses, and say hello, or...Heidi Ho...and introduce myself as a new member to this CRF'sOnly forum.

Picked up a new 2017 CRF250L-RALLY a couple weeks ago, and loving it. Have already made some big changes/improvements to it, thanks to the parts availability here at CRFsOnly. Their selection of parts for this new RALLY bike is good, and getting better as the suppliers are creating new products for the vendors as we speak.

I am a well traveled, very high mileage rider, that is more than willing to share as much knowledge as I can, or you are willing to listen to.

As I said, I have made some big changes to the new RALLY bike, so in short time I will share the info and pictures with you, until you tire of looking at my bike. ;)

Picked up my Rally about a month ago, loving it. I haven't rode dirt or dual-sport in 30yrs. I traded my 03 GoldWing and couldn't be happier. Wasn't doing any long trips and none in the future(personal reasons).
Another side note, hope this doesn't get me kicked off, I'm an old 18 year veteran of Sturgis, yes and old Harley rider as well. Started on Honda and I will finish on a Honda. LOL

Only mods I have done so far is Double-Take mirrors and tail rack. Waiting for skid plate other items from vendors.

Welcome 1st arkansas rally to the site! Glad to found CRF's Only. If you see anyone with a Skid Plate for the CRF250L Rally, please let us know. We are working with vendors now and hope to have something soon. It's going to be interesting to see them as the center plastic provides the lower mounting points for the side shrouds.

    Again, welcome!

Hey guys! just set up my account here and im glad to have found a forum so devoted to these bikes.

I sprung for the 2017 CRF250L Rally two weeks ago, and i am pleased with its stock performance at the price point.

Currently going through the break in process and i can really feel it smoothing out since mile 1.

Only mods so far is a rear rack and joe rocket magnetic tank bag for storage.

I had previously owned a yard found 1986 Nighthawk, Red White and Blue model, which had sat for 10 years. I worked some magic for someone with no experience, and got her happy, but had to sell during college for financial reasons.

Now i am in a full time position at a shaft collar manufacturing firm in New Hampshire, and i decided to go with the Rally as my first new bike.

She will be my commuter in good weather, and a weekend getaway machine.

Looking forward to learning more about my bike, and sharing the many adventures i have planned...

First up, a memorial day camp out at Allis State Park in Vermont, with two friends on Beemers and a buddy on his CRF250L.

    Check in later

Took my new RALLY out for an extended ride this past Sunday. Rather than hauling it in the back of my Tundra to one of the off-road riding areas around me, I decided to ride it there to the closest one, which is about 25 miles way. Filled the tank up with gas before entering the maze of trails at the Capital State Forest, just west of Olympia, WA. It is over 91,000 acres of land, over 100 miles of trails, for riding, hiking, horseback, ATVs, etc.

Total ride that day was 130 miles, from home to home, of which 80 miles were on the trails, single track, dual track, some well groomed gravel roads, and lots of skinny forest trails.

Almost finished with all my mods to this bike, but I can tell you that the Race Tech front suspension kit sold here on CRF'sOnly was a HUGE addition to this RALLY bike. Adding the front fork spring and spacer (and Rebound Spring) to the LEFT fork, equalizes the suspension up front, and makes for a MUCH better trail bike. For those of you that are not aware...the CRF250-L...and RALLY bikes only have a spring and rebound spring in the RIGHT fork leg, from the factory. I upgraded my bike, thanks to parts from CRFsOnly, and am as happy as a clam at high tide.

The Seat Concepts (complete) seat also makes a world of difference. 5 total hours out riding, 130 miles from home to home, but 80 of those miles ON the trails, and my butt did not hurt. :D

I also have added mods like....a ScottOiler to keep the drive chain lubed/clean.....a rear rack....despite having improved my front suspension a lot, I have also lowered the front end by 1", slid the fork tubes up into the triple clamps, and while I have also added the KoubaLink to the rear, in hopes of lowering the rear of the bike 1.75".......Norm at KoubaLink is currently re-designing the KoubaLink for the RALLY...specific to the RALLY.....as we found the link needs to be 6mm longer to accommodate the added height of the RALLY.

I have removed the OEM side stand (way too long, and an error by Honda), and installed a side stand from a 2017 CRF250-L....and OEM part from Honda for the '17 CRF250-L. This new side stand is exactly 1.5" shorter than the one on the RALLY. I found the one on the RALLY to be way too log, and caused the bike to "pogo". My change of the side stand had NOTHING to do with me lowering the bike...not at all. I discovered this error by Honda when I first looked at the Rally (actually ordered the bike first) and when it came in...all of us at the dealership agreed that the side stand was too long. I have contacted Mother Honda about that.

Once the new, shorter, side stand was installed, I then removed it again and had a local shop weld a 3/16" plate onto the bottom of the side stand foot. I shaped it to be right, painted it, and NOW I have a nice side stand foot enlarger, that will work well in dirt or sand or gravel...if this bike ever rests on the side stand and not being ridden.

I did add the PowerMadd 2" risers, so that I could keep the OEM bars, and tilt the bars slightly back toward me, while also raising the bars at the same time. LOVE this new setup.

And, I bought the rear fender splash guard...that is in front of the rear tire....that black plastic guard that is held on with two screws, to keep dirt/water/etc away from the rear shock area......so I carefully measured, and thought about it...and bought a second one of those from Honda. It turns out that this part makes an EXCELLENT front fender extension. I added it to the inside rear of the front fender, held in place by two screws, and it matches the contour lines of the front lower cowling of the bike. It is a front fender extension, and keeps all the road debris off the front lower cowling. Works perfect.

More to come. (oh, and if the day ever comes that this OLD man can figure out how to add pics to this post...you can SEE what I have done)

Excellent post and details about your CRF250L Rally Modifications! Here's some links to the spring kit and the seat you referenced.

We also have a wide range of rear fender racks and rack accessories for the CRF250L Rally:

I'm interested in the kickstand issue as this is the first someone has mentioned this. Sounds like you installed this 2017 CRF250L kickstand:

I'm assuming it was a direct install with no issues or modifications to install it?

Ken, all of the parts you have listed above are direct drop-in replacements for the OEM parts...all fit very nicely.

There IS an issue with the Rally side stand being too long, and others are now noticing it, and willing to acknowledge it, on other forums. I may have been the first to replace my Rally side stand with one from a 2017 CRF250-L, but others have followed suit. Simple replacement, however.....one must also order the side stand SPRINGS from the CRF250-L, or....as I did...modify the Rally springs to work on the CRF250-L side stand.

Really liking this new Race Tech front suspension kit installed in the LEFT fork leg, along with that Rebound Spring you and I talked about. Did another 100 miles of trails this past weekend, and it handles the bumps SO much better than stock suspension, and for VERY low cost. :D

HeidiHo...excellent feedback. Sounds like the Race Tech spring kit with the rebound spring is working great and is a must have for Rally owners. Here's a link to it for those wondering what we are talking about:

    https://www.crfsonly.com/catalog/produc ... ts_id/6428

Keep in mind this is NOT the standard Race Tech spring kit. CRF's Only includes a rebound spring for improved function and proper fitment of the primary spring.

On the kickstand, also great information. I have the kickstands and springs on the way and will put them together as a kit for Rally owners. We can't have CRF250L Rally's falling over without a rider and the throttle pinned! ;-)

I completely disagree that Honda made an incorrect sidestand for the Rally.
What Honda did was put weak suspension on the Rally AND ship the bike with the preload adjuster not set at maximum preload.
Off the showroom floor, the sidestand seems way too long but once you crank the preload adjuster to Max the stand is the correct height.
My Rally has the CRFS Only RaceTech Fork spring kit installed and the bike actually almost needs a longer sidestand now. If you lowered your bike (it is beyond me why anyone in their right mind would lower a motorcycle) and are running bone stock suspension, then you will likely have a sidestand length problem.
Mr. Honda knows exactly what he is doing and did make the stock sidestand correctly with suspension upgrades and resprung or more preload applied, the sidestand is perfect.
Go stand in the corner for questioning Mr. Honda's authority.
