    CRF250l coolant/oil leak...brand new bike

    by Wesleyhighlonesome » Wed Mar 11, 2015 12:50 am

Hi, i spend five months a year in the philippines and have been using a honda 125 locally, but its just not big enough for my wife and i to tour on, so i bought a crf250l from honda, city motors in san jos, mindoro island.
After about 500klm break in i noticed engine oil/ coolant comming from the weep hole below the water pump. Took the bike back to the honda shop (2 1/2 hr ride) the mechanic there dosnt seem to know much about the 250, and decided the solution was to plugg the weep hole. Im now waiting for a return from honda in manila to explain what the problem is,....uuuuhhh maybe a failed water pump seal? The bike has less than a thousand klm on it. Does anyone know if this is an inherant problem? I heard of another crf250l here with the same problem. Im heasetant to let this genious tear into my brand new bike, but i guess i have no choice, all my tools are in the states. Any helpful suggestions greatly appreciated....i left a question on the general crfsonly page with no reply yet....thanx wes

You are correct about the water pump seal being bad. Oil AND Coolant means both the seals are bad (one keeps oil out of the coolant, and one keeps coolant out of the oil. Carefully inspect the pump shaft when you take it apart to make sure it is not bent. Change the coolant and oil before you ride it.

Having a waterpump seal go bad early is rare, but not unheard of. It is also not specific to the 250L.
