I'm looking into getting a new rear sprocket for complete off road use. I was thinking 45 or 48 rear sprocket ? Has anyone done this ? And did you have to modify anything to make it fit?

i just did 45 tooth rear along with 13 tooth front. I really like the result. The best thing is now 2nd and 3rd PERFORM in the dirt. Whereas before they sucked. I also took the airbox resticter off the top and I believe seat of the pants that helped...I live at 6500 feet and all riding is between 6K and 9500 feet...The bikes weight is the only draw back now.....Still love it though.

Hi Guys,

Brand new on this forum (first post) recently retired and revisiting my dirtbike past.

I have ordered a 45T rear sprocket for my CRF250L but obviously I need a longer rear chain guide assy as the original guide fits quite snuggly against the standard 40T sprocket......has anyone fitted a larger sprocket and found what guide fits off the shelf?

I have read a 2014 CRF150 guide works because it uses a large rear sprocket but nobody has given any part numbers.

So any help would be appreciated otherwise i will fabricate one.

Update on Previous Post

I fitted the 45T rear sprocket ( and a longer chain but in the event only needed about 3 extra links) the performance was better but still not what you want for the dirt, I then fitted a 13T front sprocket and its now the bike it should have been out of the factory, gearing perfect for the tight stuff and sits on 75 to 80 Kph along the highway at about 5000 rpm.

The chain guide to the rear sproket was the only glitch ...... the length of the guard was OK however the rubberised black guide needed to be turned upside down to give chain clearance ... not a biggy except the bolts are now closer to the chain so will have to monitor any wear.

Next mod ... exhaust.
