    Help, weak spark

    by Wracer » Tue Jan 15, 2019 1:29 pm

i got a 2004 crf250x, and it has weak spark.
This all started because the gauge display wasn’t lighting up. I unplugged the coil and ran power to the blue/yellow wire which also has the red wire for the display.
Long and short of it is the bike has very weak spark now, won’t fire up

So the bike seems to have spark.
It’ll crank over, seems to fire, runs for a rotation or two then quits.

Bike ran perfectly fine before I put power to the display red wire, which is also the black/yellow coil wire.

How have you determined the spark is weak?
Have you checked all the connections?

If you can get it to fire and run only a short time it could be a fuel issue like a partially blocked pilot.

Was it starting perfect just before you worked on the display or have you not run it for a while.
The age of the fuel can also affect starting.

Not saying it is not a spark problem, just I know starting issues can have many or multiple causes.

It ran fine 5 minutes before I worked on it.
I stated it, I notice the display/gauges wasn’t illuminating. So I ran 12v power to the black/yellow wire at the coil, which is where the display gets its power from. The coil was disconnected. I think I heard a snap. (Thinking electrical snap/short)

I tried to start it, it usually starts right up.
But this time it didn’t. I pulled the spark plug and the spark was so weak when cranking, I touched it, no shock. Kept cranking it, after 30 seconds got a shock.

This is the wire I put 12v to.

From what you just described - I suspect you fried your ignition module.

I have a 2006 crf250r computer, but it just has plugins.
Mine has wires coming out of it, and plugins at the end of the wires?

I actually have a flywheel, magneto, cdi, and harness from a 2006 crf250r.
Not sure if one part or all is interchangeable.
I’d like to keep my lights, but I guess their not absolutely necessary

I would look for a used ignition module on ebay or Cl.

This is the number on my cdi,
    071000-2530

Now, will a crf250r cdi plug into my harness and work
    Or
Would I be able to use a flywheel, stator, wire harness and cdi off of a 2006 crf250r?

    Any info appreciated.
    Thanks

I would suspect the 250x stator would have a charging or lamp coil that the 250r stator does not have. You would have to check the wiring diagram for both to be sure.
