    15HR Piston replacement

    by fishbill » Wed Jan 11, 2017 3:35 pm

I am looking into purchasing an 08' or newer 250x and after reviewing the maintenance schedule was surprised to see it calls for replacing the piston and rings every 15hrs. I was expecting every 30hrs which I thought was typical of most MX bikes. How many of you actually do this every 15hrs? I am new to bikes and not the most mechanically inclined.

I just replaced the piston & rings on my 2006 450 and the piston measured almost zero wear and the rings about 75%. The valves were also in excellent cond. That spec. in the manual is in racing environment and not really required on normal recreational riding. The bike will tell you when it needs some attention. Valves are usually the first item to need work and if you are going to dig in to that you might as well do it all.
They are really not hard to work on as long as you have a factory manual and take your time.

For the most part, I trail ride,

I changed my 2012 250X Piston for the first time at 140 hours, it could have gone longer.

The piston I changed it with has now done close to 100 hours, I have just changed the rings, piston is fine, hell, I'll run it for another 100 before changing the piston.

    YMMV

I 123.5 hours on a JE 13.5 piston original cylinder still runs strong no oil use. Tore it down at 95 hours waste of time. Change oil and air filters often.
