    Engine stumble off the bottom

    by taylorcraft » Wed Jun 22, 2016 9:26 am

04 250x seems to "load up" when throttle is opened quickly from low rpms then it cleans out suddenly as revs move into mid range. Doesn't do it if I open the throttle slower or not under load. I have gone through the carb, ap fuel screw leak jet all fine.
Felt hot start plunger was sticking, then drained float bowl (maybe water), drained vent hose some liquid in there. Each time I think I have it fixed it returns. Only does after the engine heats up.
    Could this be electrical?
Also the bike is running hotter than in the past don't know if this is related.

It could be electrical , have you checked voltages and Ohms ?? , it could be jetting or the AP diaphragm , i am assuming the bike was running fine then just started acting up ?? , if so , did the bike sit for any length of time (more than 1 month) with gas in it ?? , a little more specific details as to what has gone on will help with diagnosis

It could be anything from carb issue , to gas , to electrical , to valves , without more specifics its hard to give a good answer , the Hot Start Plunger sticking is a clue as to it might be Ethanol related (gummed up somewhere) , but the overheating could mean a head gasket , which would cause a bog if water is mixing with the fuel , did the bike sit outside ?? , there should not be water in the bowl unless it get in thru the tank , either by being poured in , or if the gas was bad and had water in it when you put it in

    Thanks Jim
I think the next step is to check electrical as that's one direction I haven't gone.
Thought I had it fixed last season freeing the hot start plunger and putting a little freeplay in the cable.
Frustrating part is it is intermittent.
I am from Minnesota so the bike does sit for a number of months. I drain the carb and try not to run ethanol blend fuel. Usually run a little race fuel if we are running some fast fireroads.
Head gasket is a little worrisome, but coolant level is exactly the same when I check it.
