Need more power

by Dan Fluharty » Thu Mar 08, 2007 6:29 pm

I just picked up a great deal on a 06 250x for 3k and really want to get a little more out of the bike .I own a 07 450x and now the 250x and wanted to get the most out of the power it has to offer . I rode it tonight and it felt very weak compared to my 450,The bike is stock with around 10hrs on it .Should I change the exhaust ,filter +jetting first ? If so what type of pipe would you guys recomend? any help would be great !

Thanks
Dan

Rev the piss out of it and enjoy the broad power band.

It will never have the grunt of the 450 but it will hang with it if you dont baby it

Definately REJET, and then add a stage 1 or Stage 2 Cam. You won't be disappointed!!!!

I know it wont have the power of the 450 but it feels very weak . I have to work very had to get the front wheel off the ground . Hopefully the mods will help increase the power to make it more enjoyable . The bike is great for tight woods riding and handels better than the 450 in that type of terrain . Keep the advice coming !!

Thanks

Open the air box, dump backfire screen, Twin Air filter, new pipe (The CHM pipe works for me) or mod the baffle on the OEM, stage 1 Hotcam, JD jetting FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS PRECISELY. If you have the smog pump; Lose it. As above it will never have the grunt that the 450 has. I ride mine like a 125 2 stroke. Burn the clutch and keep it reving. It will pull down low in the tight stuff but it loves to be revved.
Trust those who have done the above mods you'll love the difference that they make. And best of all, Ken has all the stuff to do them right here.

Ditto what Old Dude said. In addition to the JD jet kit, go with a 42 pilot (I am using a 45).

After jetting and airbox mods. Put thr "R" muffler on it with the stock header. It makes a big difference. The stock muffler is very heavy and holds it back big time. Do the pink wire mod also.

you got a good deal their dan, but like everybody else you need to get it breathing better. having just purchased a 07250x and riding it, yes i decided to open it up for a bit more power. mods done include airbox opened up, twinair powerflow kit, pro circuit ti gp full system, 42 pilot, pro circuit fuel screw, stockcrf250r needle and 175 main. haven't done accelerator pump mod as this doesn't seem to be a problem like on the early models. yep she does go good and easier on the body than my 450r.

Moolooman:

I gotta ask, since I'm right on the fence right now about moving to the 450R (since I ride track way more than trails) can you comment on what the difference between the 2 is like? Does the 250X feel similar in handling weight to the 450R? I am fairly sure I'd like to purchase an "R", but right now I'm not sure if it would be 250R or 450R.

(my apologies if you already responded in the other thread). Thanks much,
matt

well matt as you have read, i have one of each and allthough they are close to the same weight they are two different kinds of bikes. i had 04 and 05 250xs then 450x. rode a mates yz450f and enjoyed the lite weight of the bike so i ended up buying a 450r06. have made lots of mods to this bike, but you have to realise this bike is made to go fast on the motox track, unless you make some suitable mods to suspension and tame that power. as far as handling weight goes the 250x is great for those tight trails even more open trails as you can keep it wfo. as for the track get a ride on one or both, but my preferance would be 450r, you can't beat displacement on a lot of tracks.

Thanks mooloo, I hear that. I see a lot of guys at the track I ride at almost pinning their 250's to get thru some of the sludgier parts of the track (myself included)... then the occasional 450R will come through like a Sherman Tank having it's morning tea or something... Just looks like it's not even working that hard to get thru the thicker stuff. It's amazing to see the differences in the 2 bikes.
