I've been looking at 250x's and am debating between going used or new. found an '05 for $3998 w/hand guards, leo vince pipe. I don't know squat what to look for. All I can see by pics is scratches on the plastic, but the dealer says it's in great shape. any input?

Go new if you can afford it. That way you will know it will be well maintained from day one and you get the latest refinements. If you go used bring someone knowledgeable with you or ask if you can take it to a mechanic you trust to inspect it for you.

I just bought my son a used 05' for 4300 and a month later bought myself a new 06' for 5400. It had been ridden less than 70 miles and looked liked brand new. I could not find any good used ones when I was looking for myself so I had to (thats a bit of a stretch ) buy new. I'd do either deal again in a heart beat. His is staying stock for now. Mine is pulled apart for mods.

I just picked up an 04 250X for $3,800, just could not bring myself to pay $6,800. Thats what the dealer wanted for an 07.

Are you trying to say that the "Bold New Graphics" aren't worth $ 3000????

If you are buying used, have someone check the valve clearances and run a leak down test. If they won't do that then don't buy it.
