    idle won't slow down?

    by stix250x » Mon Jan 29, 2007 7:14 pm

I have had my 06 250X for 4 months. Now every once in a while it will not come down to normal idle speed. This would not be a big deal but I have a rekluse and it idles fast enough that the clutch will not disengage. I have adjusted the idle screw and that does not help. Since it does not do this every time could it be in the carb or in the throttle cable? Thanks Scott.

Might be lean in the Pilot circuit. Try opening up the fuel screw a bit, 1/8 or 1/4 turn and see if that helps.

If you have tried to adjust the idle without cracking the throttle open you may have damaged the adjuster cable itself. Rev up the engine, adjust the idle and release the throttle and see if the idle has changed. I had a similar problem with my bike until I realized that the adjuster was buggered and all the 'adjusting' I thought I was doing was acomplishing nothing, just like spinning my tires in the mud... but not as fun.

I am having the same problem. When the bike is warm, at random times it will not return to idle. It will just rev a little higher. If I crack the throttle once, it dies down to idle. I think that it is a cable adjustment issue so I am planning on playing around with it a little this weekend.

Both AGent and Halen hit good points. A lean bike will idle high, and tend to return back to idle RPM's a good bit slower than if it wasn't so lean.

Also depending on where you're riding (temp's) it would make sense that it just started doing this, since it's getting much colder out now, which will lean out your mixture because of air density changes in the colder temps. Richen it up, or go to the next bigger pilot jet if you fear youor fuel screw will fall out once you get it set where you need it. (I'd say anything past 3.5 or 4 turns to go with the next bigger pilot jet).

Halen mentioned the idle speed adjuster screw/cable. Mine broke last year, but you could feel that it was broken. The idle adjustment screw just spun and spun with no resistance. Does it feel like that?

The idle speed adjuster screw seems to work fine. I will try and adjust my fuel mixture screw. It does seem like the problem started since the cold weather has set in. thanks

Glad to hear it isn't broken... not fun pulling the carb to replace something which otherwise was working fine not long ago.

Remember you can go richer with less detriment, or decrease in performance, than the other way around (too lean). In the case of the idle, when mine was too lean it also had a pinging sound (also apparantly a sign of being too lean) when I would putt along in 1st or 2nd at a steady pace.

    good luck.

I had that exact same problem in my '05 250X. It was maddening. I was able to get the idle down with the adjustment knob/screw (with the throttle opened some to avoid damage) and that helped, but the idel was too low when cold.

After rejetting with a 42 pilot, adjusting the fuel screw, new JD needle and larger main, I never had the issue again. Not sure which item resolved it. Prob FS and pilot jet.
