    Sub-Frame problem

    by kodibear_wc » Sat Jan 20, 2007 6:32 am

Ok, not sure if you guys remember my last post about my X not tracking straight after a wreck, well, got that straight, but am now trying to put some new plastics on and stuff is just not lining up. First, let me give you better detail about my wipe-out. I was screaming thru a mud puddle, front wheel off the ground, but not wheelieing. As I came out my back wheel popped up, so I was off the ground and still on the gas so my front wheel got even higher, and when the back wheel caught again it was back flip city.
When I picked the bike up (I was fine by the way), the muffler was pretty close to left side plate and the top bolt that held it to the sub-frame was gone, the top back part of my seat was pushed in and snapped my rear fender, and the mounting brackets were tweaked (on my seat). When I took everything off, really the only way I could tell that the sub-frame was bent was because the bottom right bolt for my rear fender was misaligned.
Well, now that I got all my new stuff, mounted a new muffler on it seems that the right side of my frame is pushed to the middle some. The muffler actually looks like it will hit the rear tire if I compress to far. Any ideas on straightening it out or is a new one in my future? I have pictures and am trying to them on here, so bear with me. Any help would be great.

If it was me I would replace that sub frame. I have no idea what a replacement would cost, but I already have too much invested in my bike to beat the sub frame into submission and hope it feels and rides right. Check ebay and craigslist for a clean used or new subframe.

I guess my course of action would be to strip the seat and plastics off the
back and give the subframe a real good eyeballin'. .

Like Instigator said, probably just tweaked your subframe. You might
be able to tweak it back if your careful (maybe use some heat? or have to replace it.

    Heres a post I found....

Kens got the Jardine Titanium subframe for the R's. Will they fit the X?

P.S. - When I was a kid my dad always told me "Your supposed to ride it on it's wheels, not it's side." He still tells me that to this day.....Man I hated hearing that and still do.
Sounds like a Titanium subframe might suit our riding style.

    "ouch!"

I'm not 100% sure the back of your seat isn't the culprit. It it possible the seat bracket is twisted, resulting in the bracket not wanting to line up with the sub frame? I'd say if all your sub frame tubes are straight (check them with a short straight-edge for warpage or bends) it could be a seat bracket problem, in which case it's not quite as pricey!

    Hoping for the best,
    matt

    Again, "ouch!"

Well, you know what they say, "If you ain't having to fix it, you ain't rideing it right". Titanium wouldn't be a bad idea. I went up my local shop today and they said they usually try prying it back with a long steel rod and a couple of people before they replace them. They said they would take the bar under the right side to the top of the left side with it strapped down to a lift. I have been looking at sub-frames on the net and since most of the "R" stuff fits the "X", if that does to, or not because of all the extra hardware for wires and stuff? I'm going to take it up to them on monday, they charge $56 an hour labor, I doubt it will take that long, unless that is the minimum. The seat is beat up pretty bad, but the only place I can find them is Service Honda and they ain't cheap. I can't find ANYBODY that makes the X seat aftermarket, and nobody is selling one on here or ebay. I do have another question though, does a R seat cover fit the X? Kinda out of left field, but I got a new graphics kit and it has one with it.

    Thanks again guys.

I'm not sure if the X airbox will fit into an R subframe. You might look into that, if you decide to go the subframe route.

I think the R seat is narrower as well... due in part to a narrower gas tank. Also just a thought.
    Good luck.

I just got a good look at the sub frame with everything off again and it is tweaked. I also don't think the R will fit, I saw a picture of one and something just didn't look right. I will take a picture tomorrow in the light and post it. It's freezing here so I sat in the kitchen putting graphics on everything. Incase anyone is intrested.... I got the 2005 HOT WHEELS set including shrouds, frame, swingarm, airbox, fork guards, upper forks, front fender (with a pro circuit arch), rear fender and seat cover for $41.00 @ another site.com. Can't beat that with a bat!
Anyway, look for the pic in the a.m..

Kodi, I bent my X subframe last year. Crash was so mild, I was surprised ANYTHING was bent.

There were no after-market X options and the R sub did not fit. I had to buy a Honda subframe. Got 20% off at the dealer but Service Honda gives 30% off last I checked.

Unless you can find a parted X, Service honda may be your best bet. Good luck.

Well, I ordered the subframe from ebay that Agent posted, got it all put on today and it all fits like a glove. When I had the old one off, I sat them up to compare and WOW was that thing bent in directions I didn't imagine. Way better idea to just change it instead of trying to tweak it and muscle it all together.

Well, thanks for all of your help.
