hello guys,

its been a while since i have posted somethin...just normally been reading these things.

well, before i let you know what is goin on with my bike (normaly) i am sad to say that i will be selling the 250. the bike had GREAT performance, but just too much money to keep it running.

well, before i sell the bike i am going to make sure it is perfect with no worries of any problems in the near future for the next owner. a while ago i had both intake valves replaced and valve seats cut, because the right intake valve had mushroomed. after about 100 miles i had to adjust both valves, which seems normal since they probably were seating, just a slight adjust. then after about 200 miles the right intake valve mushroomed AGAIN. i was quite upset that it only lasted 300 miles, because i only ride for recreation, nothing hard. so i had JUST the right intake valve replaced and seat cut. i put the bike back together and did a little break in time around my neighborhood (neighbors are nice people). i was expecting the right intake to move a bit because of seating, but when i checked my valves i saw that the right didn't move a bit and that the LEFT moved .002 inches. i adjusted it to spec and just kind of said "whatever, maybe its normal and will stay". then i took the bike for a 3 day ride with the family. after i got back i had checked the valves again, and BOTH had moved .001 inches.

i know that the right valve will be fine because its new. but i am wondering about this left intake, it moved just a little after it was new, then quite a bit after replacing the right one, and then just slightly after an even longer 3 day ride. it like sped up then slowed down. i havn't seen this kind of movement before, and i am not going to keep riding this bike, so i am wondering what any of you think. do you think its a ticking time bomb and should be replaced before it goes, or is it just settling itself in, which is odd after a few hundred miles, or maybe its not that odd...i dunno.

thank you very much in advance for your replies.

Tim

The 2004 CRF 250X has the most valve issues. It is due to the valve seat material. Changes were made in subsequent years and the problem has gone away.

The fix that most guys have gone to is to change the head to a 2006 head (or 2007) and go with SS intakes or Ron Hamp's Ferrea coated steel intakes.

i am very sorry for Ron.

i hate to say that i am not going to do those replacements for a few reasons.first, i ride mostly desert and the 250 can't keep up with my other buddies 450's. Second, i was going to bye a used KTM because i don't have enough money for a new one, those bikes used are just as good. i am a first year college student, and it would actually be much cheaper to sell this bike and buy the other one, then to go through all those new parts.

i'm guessing i might just go ahead and cut the seat and replace with a valve that i already had sitting around, its never been used, i just had an extra one.

again i am sorry for Ron, and that i cannot assist him :( .
