    shim question

    by The Hobbit » Tue Jan 02, 2007 8:02 pm

    Hi kids, I'm in my garage now, I just checked the gap and was using the spread sheet to determine what shim to use... I just wonder if they are in spec/ I am new to the whole shim thing(':oops:') (last bike 1984 XR350R) so if any one is on right now who could give me a hand I'd appreciate it.(':lol:') It's 8pm
    Thanks, The Hobbit.

    the intake measured out right .004, left .005
    exhaust, right.010, left .010
    I guess the question is do I need to change the shims at this point or ride on to my next valve check interval?
    p.s. sorry I took so long to get back here, I was pulled away by my daughter.

    I bought the shim kit from CRF's only, and it arrived today, that's why I'm checking them at this point.
    No sense having the bike open for days, I wanna ride!!! ;)

    The exhausts are OK.
    The right intake is a little tight. This is typical.
    The spec is 0.006. You'll need to shim that one.

    Make sure you spin the motor over a couple times and then re-measure before buttoning everything back up.

    Also, when all said is done, you should keep an eye on the valve clearances. Check them more regularly now that you have made an adjustment. My experience is that once they start to move, they move fast...

    Thanks for your help! Anyone have a second opinion out there? on CRF's only link "how to valve adj. and reshim" it says .005 is spec. and this is why I am un sure as to my next step!

    I guess getting back to the first question is also an issue. if on the spread sheet my new values are: right in.(0.123),left in.(0.122),right & left ex.(0.27), how do I kn ow which shim to use? or is that the new shim size? If it is...my shim kit does not have those sizes exactly, do I go to the next size up or down?? Sorry to be redundant but I don't want to screw it up! And as I've said I have never done this before.

    Ooops. Sorry the spec is 0.005 and 0.011 (+/- 0.001)for the intakes and exhausts, respectively. Sorry, had a brain fade for a second.

    Do you have a service manual or equivalent? This is a key item in performing any manitenance or repair for these bikes. I highly recommend any service manual (Clymer, Haynes, etc). The official Honda service manual can be ordered from here:

    www.helminc.com

    The answer to your last question is neither.
    First, let me clarify since I made a mistake earlier. Your right intake clearance being 0.004" is not out of spec. You are however on the line. Since the spec allows for +/- 0.001". If everything fails normally (huh? :roll: ), those clearances will decrease with wear. This will require the need for a thinner shim to open the clearance back up.

    The formula:
    A=Measured gap
    B=Specification
    C=Old shim
    D=New shim

    (A - B) + C = D

    Clear as mud?

    Clear as mud! Next ?... what is the stock shim size??
    (just trying to save pulling it out at this point) to know what to use for that part of the equation.

    Wait I may not be so stupid after all!('](*,)')
    The old shim has to be measured to know its value in the equation!!
