Fouling fast after airbox\jd jetting mods

    by woodsman » Fri Dec 22, 2006 4:49 pm

The bike has been fouling every ride since i did the mods i mentioned above ](*,) . It is also hard to start(must be kick started, dead battery:(). I read the jd jetting kit instructions and it says to use the blue needle however, it is normally above 50 here in Washington.I am using the red needle should i bother to put in the blue and would it help? Right now the temps are in the 30s and 40s. Any tips on cold starting procedures welcome!

What is your current jetting set up?

Did you change the pilot jet as well?

    Fuel screw setting?

It is hard to foul a plug on a 4 stroke, something is way out of whack...

Well, I know that in aircraft, if you run the engine too rich at idle you will foul the plugs pretty quickly. Maybe it's running too rich?

Could there be something wrong with the choke mechanism?

What altitude do you ride at?

Just trying to give you some ideas.

I Googled Carnation Washington and it said your elevation is 75'. If that is true then you should be running the red needle in the 4th position, not the blue.

So, tell us your elevation at home and where you ride most, your pilot jet (stock or not), how many turns out on the fuel screw, any mods you've done (airbox, backfire screen, filter, exhaust, etc.). We can make some good suggestions, but need this information.

If you moved the clip UP from stock, you made it leaner. If you moved it down you made it richer. Down raises the needle and makes it richer. You need to be in the 4th to start. You main seems a bit lean You should probably be using a 165, but with the cold it may be OK.

If you are using the stock pilot you may be too lean. IF you haven't removed the backfire screen, do so as it makes the breathing much better.

The one thing is your fuel screw. It should be out between 1 1/8 to 1 3/4. Be sure to check that.

You can do as baffle-ectomy and remove 2 of the three plates. Breathes better. Not much louder at all. You can try to remove it all together. A bit louder, but still in the 96 db limit.

Make sure you aren't over oiling the filter.

    Get back to us...

    Jetting

    by woodsman » Sat Dec 23, 2006 7:57 am

I have the red needle from the jd jet kit not the stock installed with the clip in the fith position and a 162 main jet(the kit didnt come with a 165) and the twinair filter is a no screen \high flow filter. The kit doesnt menchion the pilot jet i therefore havent fiddled with that and do not know its location. You mentioned the fuel screwe ill try that l8er today.About the baffle you said two out = not much difference but all three does?I havent touched the fuel screw so what should i do there?

    Whoa!!!

Hold on a second. If you are fouling you are too rich.

You need to change your main to a 158. 162 is only for high flow aftermarket exhaust.

Your needle should be on the 4th clip.

Opening your airbox makes it too lean at start up.

The pilot should be changed to a 42. Pilot is next to the main, get one from your Honda dealer.

Once the bike is running you are putting way too much fuel from the needle and the main.

    Go down in main size.

Move the needle up one clip.

    You are too rich.

JAWS is thinking you are lean because he thinks you have a 450X.

Once he realizes that we are talking about a 250X, he'll come around.

Once you change the pilot out to a 42, you'll probably be at 1 3/4 to 2 turns out.

The pilot jet (also called "Slow Jet") is located just forward of the Main jet. It can be removed using a thin bladed screwdriver (Slot head).

    They cost about $ 7.00.

I gotta start paying more attention to which forum I'm in! Thanks, Agent. I was talking 450X.

Woodsman, sorry to mislead you a bit, but some of what I said applies to the 250x.

~ has the 250X and knows a lot more than I on that subject.

Agent, why don't you put a sticky up for the 250x jetting basic settings? Then old confused guys like me can say. "Here, look at this!" :)
