    Hot Cam & Decompression

    by bbruce01 » Sat Dec 16, 2006 10:31 pm

I just installed a new Hot Cam Stage 1. Should the auto decompression have more play than the stock cam or does it even matter? Also, noticed a "clank sound" when I slowly turned the engine over when the exhaust roller passed over the decompression rod. I assume this is normal. Any feed back would be much appreciated.

Hit the search button and use decompressor as your keyword and you'll get some great info.

    For example: http://crfsonly.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5222&start=0

    There's more...

Yup it's normal to clank this way... and it will be a welcome clank should you ever find your battery drained and you need to kick-start the motor.

Hey what do you think of the Hotcam???? ;)

I not overly impressed. I feel it is now a little sleepy off the crack of the throttle. Maybe a little more mid, but not much. Honda really did a good job with the stock cam imo.

    Bruce,

I curious... what's your jetting and airbox setup?
When I switched to hotcam, I also threw a bigger main jet in, as well as remove the backfire screen from the air filter. Then just recently opened up the top of the airbox and went up yet again on the main jet. It snaps real nice, plus I'm using the heavier Kibble valves and springs (springs much stronger than stock). I'm also using the JD needle, which I think richens up the mix toward off-idle performance... this might be a thought to look toward (if you not already using it).

How are you set up? Might you be able to sneak up to the next size main jet and get some more air in as well?

    Very interested,
    matt

Besides the HotCam, what other mods have you done?

When I first installed the HotCam I had the stock exhaust and stock JD jetting settings. It was an improvement, but I was not that impressed either. When I changed to an aftermarket exhaust, removed the backfire screen, and rejetted it was a great improvement. I think an exhaust that breathes better is a must for the HotCam.

You can do baffle surgery, and save a lot of money, to get similar results as those expensive aftermarket pipes, though.

I have the airbox cut approx. 3.5" x 3.5". JD Red Needle @ 3rd position.Backfire screen removed. 150 MJ. Stock pilot and FS.
Also, stock header w/FMF Powercore 4 Ti & spark arrester installed. I will try a 45 pilot this weekend and maybe 160 MJ.

    Try a 162 main Jet and a 42 pilot.
Move the needle to 4th clip, and open the fuel screw to 2 turns.
