... it seems well worth it in the long run to go with a reuseable, stainless oil filter ... but do they work as well as a regular, throw-away filters?

thanks!

This had been brought up before on this message board and I believe most people use the paper filters, no one wanted to take a chance on it not working as well.

A couple guys use it. Dust Devil uses the Scotts I believe and advocates it's use.

I like to throw them away and put in a fresh one every oil change. I buy the Hi-Flo brand. Cheaper than Honda and are every bit as good at $ 3.00 each.

I gotta go with Agent on this one. The paper filters trap smaller particles and who wants to spend time cleaning the oil filter?

Hey Agent where are you getting the Hi-flos for 3 bucks?

I get them from my local shop RPM Motorsports in Santa Clarita.(He must feel bad for charging me $11 for the Maxima oil)

You can get them at Cyclegear for $3.99

Thats not a great bargain. Taking the buy it now price of $17.99 plus the $6.90 shipping you get $24.99 divide by 6 and you get $4.15 per unit.

In my location in Bakersfield, Cycle Gear has them for $3.99 plus 7.25% sales tax and you get $4.28 ea and no waiting.

If you know a guy that knows a guy you can get 10% off of that. ;)

I use the Ready SS filter, doing 3 bikes at $4 a piece (it was more like $10 where i bought them) + oil was just too much.

I take them out every oil change, swiss them in some mineral spirits, and blow them clean with air.

I had them in the bikes for 2 years now.

I use Scotts Stainless in my 450X. It's something new to me, so I don't know how well it works. All I know on my 250X I wasn't changing out the paper one enough. That's why I went with the Scotts Stainless one. I will be ordering one for my wifes 250X also soon. I know I will clean it every time I change the oil that way. I change my oil about ever ride. So those paper ones would add up for me.

Actually, the filter you need from this site is HF115 for $2.99. Not the HF116 for more. Been using these for over 2 years with no problems. This is the cheapest place you will find them.

I used to get them from a guy off E-bay for less, but he's long gone now.

The HF 116 is the correct one for the 250X and the 450X. I have known guys to use the HF 115 by mistake and it'll work but does not fit tightly and allows bypass.

From Hi Flo Filtro website:

You selected the model:
Honda CRF450 X-5,6,7

2005 to 2007

Oil Filter: HF116

Air Filter: HFF1018

Hmmm. Interesting. Wonder what the difference is? When I switched from OEM to the 115, I checked them both out real good side by side and they looked exactly the same, except for the color of the paper element. The rubber gromet had the same snug feel on the cover nipple.

Now, I'm going to have to get a 116 and compare the two. I did have one that had a loose fit and thought "odd". I just swaped out the gromet with the old one and all was good. Guess I need to check this out.
