    05 needle setting

    I have a #158 main jet and a #42 pilot jet ready to install. Plan to remove the snorkel on top of the air box. (What is the best way to remove the snorkel?) Does anybody have any recommendations for needle posistion? Go down 1 or 2 grooves on the needle?

    I know about the JD kit but I want to try to richen the stock needle settings first. I plan on adjusting fuel screw as needed and trying pink wire mod later after these changes and pulling or modifying the muffler baffle.

    Anybody have any luck with these settings at 2000 to 4000 feet?

    Removing the snorkle is pretty easy. It's just glued in place. Yank it out.

    For that metal bracket, you'll have to drill out the rivets. If you plan to open it up more, you can drill, cut and trim as needed. While keeping the intake boot blocked off with a clean towel or something along those lines.

    I run a JD needle at a lower altitude, so I won't be much help there. If your 1/4 to 3/4 open throttle doesn't feel right, try a position lower than stock and experiment from there.

    If you cut the top of the airbox with a sharp knife you will save yourself the hassel of cleaning out all the little filings from the airbox. The JD needles are tapered differently than stock so the bike will react differently than what you are going to do... just my 2 cents

    Yup Halen is correct.
    After stuffing all kinds of towels into the intake boot to block off shavings, I carefully used a rotozip (neat tool) to open up the top of the airbox. Shavings everywhere. Not in the important places, but still... what a mess. Then I ended up using a fresh utility knife to neaten up the edges of the cuts anyway.

    Shoulda just started with the utility knife!
    ah well. In any case, gettin' mo' air and fuel means gettin' mo' power. Once you get it jetted to match the change, It'll probably make you wish you'd done it sooner. :roll:
    Good luck -- I highly recommend the JD kit, but also encourage people to tweak on the stock stuff. It's how you learn. Plus you have a good comparasin if you should ever move to the JD kit.
