    2009 CRF230M

    by steakcrf77 » Thu Feb 18, 2010 4:20 pm

Does any one have any experience with this bike? Is it the 230F just setup SM? I am looking online just getting an idea of what the used or left over inventory of the SM's are and think a 230 could be great on the street. I have seen those "Yellow" bikes out on the road and that seems to be mostly what I see, some KTM's and a Nice Husky. Cost is a factor but I am seeing the inventory around $4K, and that doesn't seem so bad to me. Any ideas guys and gals? Should I just be looking for another CRF and convert it and "TRY" to plate it in CA? Thanks everyone!

Other than the displacement it shares very little with the CRF230F. It has more in common with the XR200 actually. It's a dependable bike and no worries about getting a plate...so go for it.

I think for an around-town bike, a 230SM would be OK... but it doesnt have enough power to get you out of trouble if you needed it.

Think of a sewing machine with wheelses.

I have the 230M. It's been my "Super-commuter" since summer '10. It gets great gas mileage, around 83mpg. I do agree with the lack of power comment however. I have an after market exhaust tip and a 3 stage jet kit in it, which helps, but I would still like a bit more pulling power from the top end. It's definately not a racer but for the daily commute it has been everything I could have asked for. Saved nearly 10,000 miles from my Jeep in the last 2+ years not to mention the probably couple thousand bucks in gas. (16 mpg in the Jeep) Can't beat the price either, picked mine up for $4,500 after tax, new from the showroom. 8 miles on the OD upon delivery. Way more price friendly than the Kawi, or Suzuki of similar models.

Thanks! Yeah, I just checked out the 250L a bit online. It's a cool bike, but you'd have to buy wheels and tires to put it in SM trim. That was why I was drawn to the 230M. It was a SM from the dealer. Although I do think it looks better than the Kawi 250, they could have tried a little harder with the styling. The stock front fender is rediculously big for the small SM front wheel. It makes the bike look goofy from the side, which ironcally is how they have taken a lot of the promo photos. The bike looks better in person, and from different angles. Not that looks are everything, but you have to wonder if that has cost them sales.
Back to the 250L. I like the styling on that bike, but for me, if I'm getting another bike, which I am planning to do, it's going to be a 650. The 250 is too close to what I have now, and that quest for power will not be satisfied with 20cc's. I would like to see pics of that 250L in SM trim though.
