I hope the boy has a great time with riding and racing, but I can tell you this: There are exactly ZERO 10 year olds who at that age you can tell a thing about as far as how good they "will" be. Zero. Do some reading. Read about all these top shelf pros who didnt even start racing until they were 12,13,14,15 years old and there are many more than you'd think. Or maybe they did at 10 and were running way back. It just doesnt matter.
No 10 year old has the judgement to race in those conditions with other bikes all over the place, it just doesnt work that way.
The top racers all share one thing, and that is mastery of cornering speeds and technique. Pinning the throttle to get a roughly correct speed, standing correctly and firing a jump is not a measuring stick of talent or potential. Add a bunch of other bikes, ruts, etc. and it'a a new ball game. One a 10 year old should not be playing in my opinion.
Recently I read a horrible post where a freakin' EIGHT year old DIED, jumping, of course. The post was the most pathetic piece of garbage (next to his father who said"we play hard, we live hard"...WHAT?)I've ever seen, full of "God Speed, little guy", and get this"Well,he lived, he really lived".
That idiot that aid that and the poor kids dad both need the same thing :A brain.
Sorry for the rant. In my opinion kids have no business on SX type tracks, with SX type obstacles. It'll never change. It's just dumb. Doug

i remember racing and riding when i was 10, i even remember racing when i was 8, and i had plenty of common sense on the the track. i remeber coming up to a table top beside a quad and letting off becuase i didn't want to get my lines crossed and end up hitting the quad in the air or vise versa with the quad coming towards me so i let off and coasted over the jump. point of that is that i had enough sense at 10 to know what situations to stay away from on the track and if i could or should do something.

there are a lot of young kids out there who you can tell have the potential to advance in the sport. i know a kid who cleared everything on my local and did so safely and with great technique when he rode 65s. hes now 14, riding a yz85 and i guarantee that he would school anyone riding C class and i wouldn't doubt hed keep up with people in B class.
I've read that the pros didn't take it seriously as in training untill they were 15-16.

Thats great, good for him! Of course the scariest thing in the world is watching your kids ride, but at ten your actually pretty smart and aware. I think its great, good for you and your son, I hope all the best for him despite any negativity from anyone, I feel the earlier the better,it will lead to less fear later. Good luck!!!
