    2009 Engine Rebuild

    by brianpmcpherson » Mon Feb 17, 2014 5:29 am

Hello, is there a difference in the size of a piston for 2007 -2012 bikes and 2013 engines? Reason I ask is I have just done engine rebuild on my sons 2010 bike, kicked it over and it all went solid. Stripped it down again and it seems as though the piston is hitting the head. Timing is all fine. The part number for 2009 piston is 13101-KSE-670 but the part number on the box of the new piston is 13101-KSE-A70 which is for a 2013 onwards engine.

    Thanks in advance.

Welcome to CRF's Only. The 2012 and the 2013 CRF150R have the same Honda part numbers (13101-KSE-A70). And yes, 2007-2009 have the 13101-KSE-670. Wiseco has different part numbers for the 2012-2013 piston. However, this doesn't necessarily mean they are different from a fitment standpoint. It could just be a compression ratio difference. I haven't investigated/compared/measured them side by side to see what, if any, fitment issues there may be. Definitely check yours and make sure there hasn't been contact with the valves.

Thanks for the reply. No contact with the valves, valve timing was spot on, all marks lined up perfectly. As a bit of background, this was a routine maintenance exercise, Piston change at 30 hours ready for the new season. Bike was running sweet 2 weeks ago, so no internal damage prompted the piston change. I am waiting delivery of KSE-670 (2007-2011) piston, will post on here if this solves the issue.

Please let me know what you find with the replacement piston. Curious about what the issue is.

OK, picked up the correct piston, Part number 13101-KSE-670 last night and compared against 13101-KSE-A70. There is a distinct difference in the high parts of the crown of the piston, KSE-A70 (2012 onwards) is noticably higher in profile. I will be fitting the earlier piston this evening, will update the forum tomorrow.

OK fitted the 13010-KSE-670 piston, which is the correct part number for the year, and all is well. Bike running beautiful.
