CRF 150R Maintenance Question - Necessary???

    by 1kayaker » Sat Jan 18, 2014 9:36 am

I've been reviewing the manual and there are 3 things I am questioning. It recommends replacing the drive chain every 7.5 hours as well as the fork oil. It recommends replacing the piston/rings every 15 hours. I realize that if you are racing, this should probably be followed a little more religiously, but I bought this as a trail bike for my 13 year old son, who is a great rider, but is not tearing up the engine... Anyone wanna chime in here? I realize maintenance is VERY important, but I also know from past experience that Hondas are bomber and you can push the limits a bit....

the maintenance schedules honda provides are for those racing each week and who are investing more in the travel, race fees, etc than replacement parts cost. only you can determine how far you want to go on maintenance but most of us extend them without issue.

My son put ~120 hours on an '08 150R. By the time we sold it, the intakes were close to needing to be replaced, but it still had the original piston. I never had to pull the head so I am not sure how the piston skirt looked.

It was on the 3rd chain and second front sprocket. The rear sprocket was rotated between 3 different ones (gear changes), but the original was done.

Fork oil was changed each spring, but I did do a complete fork rebuild one summer. The rear shock was stock.

Muffler (Yoshi) was repacked every winter.

ALL bearings were cleaned and greased each winter, and going into each summer (we ride alot in the spring).

Oil and filter every 10-12 hours. Trans fluid every other oil change.

Went through 3 clutch cables, at least as many throttle tubes, and it was on the second set of throttle cables. Carb was completely refreshed each winter, with a blow-out cleaning each summer.

Air filter changed every day of riding, even when camping.

It did go through 1 water pump seal, and a set of front brake pads.
