    Clutch

    by Casey303 » Mon Jun 10, 2013 5:40 pm

The clutch is going out on my 09' 150rb. I was wondering if i should get a stock clutch or something different. I do mostly trail riding in Colorado.

    Thanks

Stock fibers are pretty decent for trails. If you want serious longevity, switch out to a Rekluse. My son put over 100 hours on a 150R with the plates staying well within spec. The 250X has 160 hours with the originals and a Z-Start Pro. The X still measures as NEW! We run pro-honda trans fluid.

i was thinking of getting a rekluse clutch. How much does it change the way the bike rides?

If you ride mountain single track it will make the bike respond much better as the stock clutch cable setup on the 150 is pretty bad - you probably replace the cable every 30 hours if you use it a lot. The Rekluse flat out ends the need to feather the clutch.

You might feel like you lost something coming out of turns on the flat stuff for a little while, but that goes away pretty quick.

So I installed the reklus clutch today. I put everything back together and tried to shift the bike, I could not push down on the shift lever and pulling up did nothing. Also when I got the bike started and held in the clutch the tire still spun when i rev'd the engine. What did I do wrong and how do i fix it? Thanks in advance for any advice.

With the shifter not moving, sounds like you dislodged the gearshift spindle (runs from the shifter to just behind and to the rear of the clutch basket). It has an L shape flat bar with holes. When the clutch basket is out, it is extremely easy to push the spindle towards the left side of the bike. I do not think it takes more than 5mm before it slips off the pin, and if the bike was laying on its side when you changed the clutch, it will sometimes drop toward the floor without even bumping it. I am not talking fall out of the bike stuff, just enough to dislodge it. What happens is the thing moves and when the bike is stood back up or things get jostled around during assembly, it falls back into place only the pin is not in the L bracket so the shifter will not move.

I have never fired up a bike where the spindle was dislodged so I do not know if it locks up the transmission (I do not think it would) but I the shift lever does act exactly like the way you described.

Which Rekluse did you install? If it is the Z Start Pro, did you torque the small allen heads that hold the plate or did you guess? Did you check to make sure the plates have wiggle room before you put the side cover back on?

    Check that first.^

My wife has the z-start pro in in her 150RB. Did you un-do the cable from the lever before you installed and follow the directions for adjusting afterward. Possible you got the clutch cable slack or clutch actuator arm mis-adjusted.

I think it will most likely be the gearshift spindle. I will pull it apart and check. I did disconnect the clutch cable while I was working on it. I installed the Z start. I put in the screws by feel.

I did make sure the plates had wiggle room.

I'll be taking it back apart soon and I was wondering why I need to drain the engine oil. I understand why I need to drain the coolant. Also will I need to redrain the transmission oil to get to the gearshift spindle?

you don't need to drain the engine oil.

hmmmm, pretty sure you do. I never took the side cover off the 150 w/o draining the transmission. I think you may end up with a pretty big mess if you don't but not sure. You can drain it into a clean coffee can then put it back in by straining it using your wife's old stockings.

I have a rekluse EXP in my '08 250R and would love to put one in my 150RB. I noticed your discussion about having one in your 150, but I dont see that rekluse lists a clutch for the 150. Did you find that a rekluse for 250 fits?
