    Starting and idle issues

    by blackj » Mon Dec 12, 2011 3:56 pm

    I have a 2007 CRF150R
Everthing is stock on the carb at the moment.
Its recently cooled down a lot here in Arizona and my bike had gotten increasing difficult to start when cold and the idle was very weak, once back of from the idle hang. So from reading here I determined that the bike was now running really lean.
I got a adjustable fuel screw and installed it. After playing with the fuel screw adjustment and idle setting I got it quite a bit easier to start and it will idle nicely now. Still has a little bit of a hang initally but drop back down way faster.
There is still a couple of issues that are happining that I would like help fixing.
When I'm starting it cold, It seems to start better with the choke it the running position. Then once its running I can pull the choke out slow until it warms up. Normally the first few attempts to pull the choke kills the engine. Any idea what might be the cause of this?
Second issue, from idle is I whack the throttle full open the bike just chokes and dies. Even if its still in neutral.

At the moment, I have the carb off the bike I just got a JD jetting kit and I figures while installing it I'd clean the carb. Although it doesn't seem too dirty.

I figure the jetting and AP mod should fix the second problem, am I correct? and any idea whats cause the hard to start with the choke open problem?
Also with the stock jets and the bike idling nicely the tacho reads between 2100 and 2200 rpm, "work connection tacho/hours meter" To me this seems a little hi but it really doesn't idle when I lower it much below that.

correct, install the JD kit you have and do the AP mod and things will improve significantly as long as there are other issues with your carb.

let us know how it goes.

According to hours on the bike we used to have harder starting and a hanging throttle when the valves were close to out of spec on our old 08 150R/B, just a thought, it might not hurt to check the valve clearance while your there.

Will check the valves while I'm putting the carb back in.
    Thanks for the info
