Is a crf150r to much for my son

    by siege » Sun Nov 21, 2010 11:54 pm

Hey guys needing a little help here I am looking at getting my son a bike and I not sure what to get him he is riding a pit bike right now and he needs more bike I am looking at the crf80 0r the crf150r. With the crf80 I don't know if he will out grow it in a half year I know the 150 will last him for at least 2 years or so what do you guys think how big are you and what kind of riding experience do you have.

He is 4 foot 6 inches tall and about 80 pounds

He is just a touch short, but should be fine on the 150R. We went from KX65 to CR85 to CRF150R in less than 2 years. My son was about 4-10 and 88 lbs when we got the 150R. The CR85 is the same size as the 150R, but did not have enough low end to make it up the bigger hills.

Go with the 150R, add a 9oz Stealthy Fly Wheel Weight, maybe a larger tank depending on how long he likes to ride, and call it good. Regardless, you will have to teach him how to start a thumper, and how to pick the bike up by the handle bars so he does not rip the seat or burn his hands (obviously heavier than a pit). The 150R will take away any doubt on power.

If you're not buying a new one, you should buy Agent's. You can be sure it's in tip top shape...

My son rides a 150R and loves it. Only thing I can recommend is to buy a big wheel version. I bought a small wheel and it was great until my kid hit his growth spurt and could use the bigger wheels, but i dont want to move him up to a 250 till next year. It's a pain to convert from a small wheel to a big wheel, but much easier and cheaper when going from big wheel to small wheel.

Yes, I outgrew my 150R, then an RB and ended up on a full size bike in one year. That was an expensive year for us trying to race our first full season. My dad wasn't very happy.
