    Kick slide stall?

    by Collin » Mon Jan 19, 2009 8:05 pm

With the help of everyone here, I have tuned my 150R to an awesome running machine. It starts now on demand, no overheating, no clutch slip, and no bog. I would just like some advise on the one thing I can't quite get worked out.

When kick sliding into my turns on a MX track or when tearing up dad's backyard, the bike will try to stall as I slow, but refires as I drop the clutch and throttle out. It seems to only be a problem after it heats up. Everything else is so good I hate to go back and start adjusting on the carb again. Will setting the idle a little higher help? What else should I try?

Are you pulling in the clutch?
If you are, then maybe it's not fully disengaging and need to adjusted.
You should try railing the turns not sliding.

Railing the turns works great on big MX tracks with a couple of grooves and lots of options, but I need to be able to make this work when racing in traffic or racing in tight woods. Clutch adjustment is good. I have been clutching earlier and later to see if anything makes a difference. I can run it five or six times with no problem, but after it gets warmed up good it stalls consistantly which makes me believe it is going to become a problem when racing starts up.

I may be able to fix this with throttle control, but I need to know if I can do anything to the bike to help first.

You could try raising the idle speed

Turned up the idle a little, with no real difference. You know this started after running in the colder weather, would that have any affect?

I found out something interesting. I have fought the hanging idle issue since I got this bike. I took some advise from another website and found a fix. I turned the idle down, yes down, and fixed the stall and the hanging idle. Now I am sure that is a sign of some other problem in the carb, but it is working for me now. Any guesses what else may be going on in the carb for it to act like this?

Check your float level it sounds like it may be low and running out of gas coming out of the corner.

I have also fought this problem since new, and recently solved it. A 48 pilot and turning down the idle fixed it. What this tells me is that the TPS is fighting the idle position. At a higher idle, the TPS is advancing the timing and making it seem like a hanging idle. The 48 pilot allows more fuel at idle to be able lower the idle/slide below the TPS point that advances the timing. Adjusting the TPS should also achieve similar results, but I haven't been able to find that perfect TPS setting. If you set all the resistance/OHMS settings correctly for the TPS it doesn't fix it. The lower idle seems to be the fix. Some have put flywheel weights on and had good luck keeping them from stalling.

I haven't had problems stalling in a race, but I am in the gas. The pilot issue makes a lot of sense, but everything else is running so good right now, I am scared to touch the carb. If it becomes a problem while racing, then I will try that next. Thanks for the great advice.
