    Is this the correct bike

    by brute898 » Sat Nov 29, 2008 11:06 pm

Hi I am thinking of buying my son a crf150r. We would be riding bush tracks and he would not be racing it. Is this bike ok for this and what sort of maintance would need to be done and how frequent? Is the 07 model ok with the valves or do they bugger up all the time?
    Thanks

i would recommend a crf150f less maintenance user friendly but if your son whats power and some good suspension go with the 150r but remember its way more maintenance and you never know your son might want to start racing

It's a great bike, but the maintenance requirements are significant, it is a race bike.
It can be made into a very respectable off-road bike, but be ready to spend quite a few dollars on it to make that happen.
The sort of off-road bike it can be though is one for more advanced level riders, to be sure.
The valves issue is not that they bugger up, it's that they are very high performance bikes with high power output, high rpms, high compression, and high heat. Therefore the top ends of the motors do require a maintenance schedule that must be followed .
A 150F or 230F are great bikes with outstanding re-sale values for when he's ready for something faster.
When the boy wants a little more, higher performance can be had fairly reasonably with jetting/airbox/exhaust/camshaft modifications which don't negatively effect the bikes dependability at all.
Just look into the BBR section on the Crf's Only on-line store  Doug

The 150F worked great for me riding trails and even when I first started running hare scrambles. When I became more confident, I moved up to the 150R. I then overheated the 150R because I wasn't moving fast enough. I learned you MUST ride the 150R more aggressively. You won't like the 150R in the tight woods without some experience.

True all of that. 150F or 250f for trail riding. The 150R was slated a race only bike when it first came out. Makes a very fun track bike but higher maint. than F models. Some builders(Service Honda,BBR) are doing a lot to make it into a capable trail bike but sounds like you should shy away from that now.

i think you should get the 150r. last year in aprill when i was getting into dirtbikes my friend said to get a crf100f simalar to a crf150f.big mistake. after a few months i wanted a faster stronger bike with better suspension and im a trail rider.just in august i got my 150r i use it for trails and sometimes the track. its fine with the trails also its an awsome track bike. ive only spent about 120$ on maitence since i bought it . my valves have always been inspec usally get checked evry 50-60 hours.i havent touched my trail bike since i got the 150r. also if your gona ride trails make sure you can easily touch the ground caz this bike has power so i sudjest the 150r :D
