HELP changing the oil on my 150r, anyone have a PDF manual?

    by Pitboy » Fri May 30, 2008 8:29 pm

I just bought a 150r for roadracing and got it home and changed the oil and then read on here about there being separate tranny and crankcase oil compartments. I assume I drain the oil from the same drain plug on the bottom? What about adding oil back in? Do I add to both sides of the motor? How much in each. This is the first bike I've ever owned that was setup this way.

first of al i wasn't very smart to get a full on race bike as a first but since you did you can use the same oil in bolth use 10w-40 amsoil is the best and you add it in to bolth sides witch is also engine oil get the service manual i think you might have been misled see you have to rebuilt the motor every 20-30 hours or so and you have to check the valves but get a service manual and go from there

Never said it was my first bike, I've been racing SV's and 600's with WERA and CCS for several years. Also raced a yz450 in supermoto for a season and now I am racing minis with my kids. I've just never owned a bike that had separate compartments for the oil in the tranny and the oil in the crank case. I'm also perfectly capable of rebuilding motors, this wont be my first rebuild. If someone could point me to a link where I can get a manual I can brush up on some of the differences. For now I'll settle for just changing the oil.

Are there two separate drain plugs since there are two separate compartments for the oil?

Yes. There may be some issues with the previous post.

There are separate drains. 10W-40 is the correct weight for the engine side. On the trans side, I would recommend a Transmission specific oil in an 80W or 85W grade. Maxima Extra full synthetic is the best oil you can buy for the engine. Maxima MTL is the best for transmissions.

The engines do NOT need to be rebuilt every 20-30 hours.

Honda recommends that if racing, the piston be changed at 15 hours. Most get upwards of 150-200 hours on the piston. Even with hard use, usually the piston skirts are still within spec and only the rings need be changed.

The 150R also has steel valves so the Titanium valve issues don't creep into the 150R.

I haven't found the PDF manual for the 150R yet. I do have them for the bigger brothers and alot of the procedures will be similar as the engines all share the UNICAM design.

Let me know if you'd like them.

Yeah, if you could get me a copy of a manual that outlines the proceedures and locations for getting this oil changed I would appreciate it.

Right now I have removed the oil filter and changed it, and removed the drain plug on the bottom of the motor (its kinda a long plug and is found just underneath the right foot peg directly on the bottom of the motor.) I assume this is the engine oil drain plug but I might be wrong here. Where is the other drain plug? I have looked everywhere underneath the motor and either I am missing it or I dont know what I am looking for. Would there be a problem in using Mobil 1 10w-30 oil? I've always used this in my other bikes and its done real well but then again I've never owned a bike with this type of configuration.

My email is: [email protected] if you can email me a PDF manual that might help me out. I've got the bike all hooked up, revalved the forks, installed BBR springs, installed droop limiters in the forks (its a roadracing thing) but I cant get this oil changed to save my life..... :)

    Thanks for the help.

    Changing transmission oil

    by Collin » Fri Sep 19, 2008 11:15 pm

Don't feel bad, I couldn't figure it out either until I got a manual. The fill on the right side of the bike is the transmission fill. The bolt directly behind the water pump on the gear case that has a square indention above it, is the check oil level bolt. You remove it and if oil comes out, you have plenty. This bolt can also be found by going straight down from the transmission fill cap and slightly forward on the gear case. The drain is on the left side of the bike. It is below and in front of the counter sprocket cover. The picture in the manual puts it right behind the frame, but it really isn't obstructed.

The manual says the capacity of the transmission is .60 US quarts of of oil. I don't know what everyone elses opinion is, but mine took about nearly 8/10s of a quart. Mobile should be fine, but everyone has a personal preference for their favorite.

I would be interested to know what others opinions are of Honda 10-30 or 10-40 vs. the 80-90 gear oil that others are running.
