    Racing the CRF 150

    by crfdoug » Tue Oct 02, 2007 2:46 pm

I am fairly new to MX scene. My 7 year old races in southern MI. this is his first year, doing fairly well. My other son wants to start racing. he's been riding for a few years now. I was considering buying the 150 but I talked to the local track owner and he said he would have to race in the 125 jr class with the 150. honda is not making the 85s anymore so its tough to find one thats not used (not that i'm opposed but would rather have new). short of buying another brand i'm at a loss. My question is has any one heard when the 150's will be legal in the 85 class? if ever?

My friend races a 150R in the 85 11-12 class. What disctrict are you in? Different districts have different rules.

Here in district 5, the 150r is legal in the 85 class.

What track (owner) did you talk to? The D-14 rulebook makes no mention of the 150R. So it would fall on the track's decision.

This is directly from the AMA, as I have a 150R myself in D16. They say that the 150 will probably never be legal in the 85 class. They say they "want to keep the costs down for families just entering mx. 4 strokes are so much more expensive, it might scare away new mx families." Yeah.. Ok... A 150 Class will probably be introduced in the next couple years, but until then, its the tracks decision.

Down here in Florida the 150's can only run in the supermini class.

I'm friends with some AMA reps and board members here in MI (District 14). I already received a response from one of them regarding your issue. The 150 is illegal in the 85 class, but you already knew that. The AMA D-14 guys are meeting this week. He believes the topic will be brought up and there will be some district rule changes (not necessarily pertinent to the 150). I'll post up any responses or changes applicable to this convo....

I love the little 150, and look forward to giving one to my spouse with a bunch of off-road mods this Christmas.
However, I agree completely with getting them their own class. The costs of racing if you do it regularly are crazy, and I think two strokes are very much worth saving.
The four stroke thing has not a thing in the world to do with emissions or the EPA, that's a fairy tale that isn't true.
KTM did a study that analyzed what the real emissions differences are between two and four stroke motorcycle engines and they are insignificant, one of the reasons they are sticking with them. Good for them. Doug

I appreciate the info. I'm in district 14. The track owner I talked to is at Baja MX. I guess I'll buy the 85 for now, and maybe by the time my 7 year old is ready for the 150 they will have a class for it.

Baja is as fair as they come around here.
My buddy (AMA rep D-14) just dropped me message about the 150R and class distinction.

"AMA Congress was last weekend. The 150 will remain in the Supermini and JR fourstroke class (12-16 up to 250) only. It will never be in the 85 class nor will the AMA ever allow a oversized four stroke in the smaller cc classes. (i.e. a 90cc four stroke in the 65 class) Reason is because of the high cost to maintain a four stroke."

Not sure about the "ever" and "never" words, but it looks like the 150R will be in the bigger classes for some time to come...

the 150r is legal in the 85 class
    125 thats bull
if i was you i would talk with the track manager
    and if not
buy him a left over 85
or a left over 125 or a new 250 and lower it
or buy a 150r and bore it out and soup it up
my friends got one thats rippin past all the 250s even a couple 450s so i say buy a 150r and bore it out
this sounds retarded but when you ride with a huge disadvantage you will become great at equal riding
bec i have an xr100r and i race the 150rs so im at a disadvantage but i learned to cope with it now im actually ranking in the top 10 and everybodys amazed but when i get a 250 i will be faster than evrybody else
    understand ??
