    Get a tap?

    by mikey526 » Fri Jul 13, 2007 7:13 am

Okay I posted "Stripped bolt" a while ago. someone told me to " get a tap and that will clean it right out" or something like that. Whats a tap? How much does it cost? How does it work? Thanks a bunch.

A tap cuts a thread on the inside surface of a hole, creating a female surface which functions like a nut.

    There are three different types.

Bottoming Tap: has a continuous cutting edge with no taper. This allows a bottoming tap to cut threads to the bottom of a blind hole.

Plug Tap: has tapered cutting edges, which assist in aligning and starting the tap into an untapped hole. .

Taper Tap: has a more pronounced taper to the cutting edges.

You can buy them in a set or single at most auto parts stores. Price depends on quality.

Great! (I think) So since the first like two threads on the gold insert in the tank look like there pushed down, should I go with the taper tap or the plug tap? Thanks a bunch A.S.

Alright. Im looking at tap's at like lowes and ace hardware and all there taps are in inches... im assuming that the actual hole that the bolt on the tank goes into is 8mm, since it is an 8mm bolt. 8mm is like 40/127 in. conversion, so the closest tap I can find is 3/8. Would this work? if anyone can find a tap that is exactly 8mm, please give me the link. Also, since only the first 2 or 3 threads are pushed down, I would get a plug tap, right? Thanks!

No that isn't it. 8mm is the size of the head the threads are different. You could take the bolt to the store and check it on their guide then you know what size you have. There is no conversion.
Someone here will know the exact threads you are talking about.

The tap you will need for the shroud bolt is a 6mm X 1.00.

Thanks a ton guys. It would have taken me a long time to figure that out.. I'll swing by like Midas or Checker auto or something tomorrow.. hopefully they have what im looking for. Once I get the tap, do you just stick it in the hole and twist kind of like a drill bit? I bet the package says something about that actually. Thanks for all your help guys.

Take it easy if you just jamb it in you will destroy the threads. Start it like your starting a bolt and slowly work it in. If it starts to get tight back it out and then back in. Good time to take it easy. :)

Yesterday I got a tap set, came home and tried to do it with just the wrench thing that it came with. I was doing a full turn, than a quarter turn back like it said. After about 45 minutes, that still wasn't working, so I got the cordless drill. Maybe not the best idea, but after about 2 minutes using that I pulled it out, tried to put the bolt in and hah! it went in perfect. I got the shroud back on with all four bolts in place. Thanks a bunch for all your help guys. I couldn't have done it with out you.
