Four of us made the trip to Idaho City this morning, me, Kim, Lance, and his son Bret. We all mounted up on our Honda's and headed for Pilot Peak. We took all kinds of side trails on the way up, but eventually you end up on the old road, FS314, all the way to the top. After a few power bars and some much needed water, we headed back down via a loop to Elk Creek. We had one little stream crossing, then the main channel of Elk Creek itself.

Nice.... Cool water.

We headed down to where Elk Creek and Deer Creek merge, crossed again, and followed the creek back up to FS314. We then enjoyed a run down the old canal, which is getting rougher every season, and then back to the vechicles. We stripped off our gear and went over to Granite Creek and washed/cooled ourselves off.

It was a great 42.56 mile ride! Temperature was perfect. Here are some pics of the gang:

Would you say there is enough riding to make it worth a 4hr+ trip?

I wouldn't mind knowing the answer to this one. Looks like you had fun. maybe next spring I will try and make my way over that way.

What is that building in that last pic?

The building in the last photo is the Pilot Peak Fire Lookout which sits right at 8,000 feet.

Some of the best riding in all of South West Idaho is in and around the Idaho City basin. In May, they run the annual Idaho City 100, an AMA National ISDE qualifier. 50 miles for novice to advanced, twice around for experts.

Most of this course is even fun for old ladies like me, it just takes me most of the entire weekend to do what real racers do in a couple of hours!

How about camping? We're thinking about a trip in April/May weather depending and would probably drive the night before, camp and then ride the next day and come home.

There is tons of dry camping, both in the basin and up along the ridge lines as well.

There is only one NF campground and its not very OHV friendly.

Where can I get maps for the area and how to get there from Boise/Meridian where we'd be staying?
