    Riding after a wrist break

    by Socrates » Wed Sep 27, 2006 4:30 pm

    Ok -

I know I am not the only one with a broken wrist on here. :?

Had surgery a month ago to put the plate in, photo is here:

Anyone recommend a good brace to wear when I am able to ride again? I have been looking but would really like to find something that would help protect against the force of impact if I am ever heading to the ground again in the same way...

Also, my doctor said I woul dprobably want to get some type of anti-vibration glove to wear when I start riding again, anyone use one of these gloves and can you tell a difference?

    Thanks

Wow that looks the same as mine I did the same thing to my left wrist 3 years ago. I just used a steel splint with the bottom side removed. It took about 1 year to heal completely. Oddly enough the left wrist is the good one now.

    Thanks Matt,

I am doing alot better now, although the wrist is still pretty stiff at times. No longer have any pain and have gotten most of my movement back.
I bought a flexable brace from 661, just slip your thumb through ti and velcro it around your wrist. Haven't rode much yet but will probably try it out in the next few weeks.

I think this is really funny because i actually just got out of a cast now to this date proably 2 months. I see you had surgery, I didnt but i broke close to my growth plates and they got messed up, plus chipped a huge chunk of bone.

I dont know about you guys but ive been riding since the 5th day after i got my cast off. I havent actally done a full day of riding but i rode som hard miles in the yard, street, and trail, my trail is actually technical in some spots to the point where it mimicks what whould happen in a nasty trail situation. I have done this no problem and I have not done physical therapy.

I think that u know the extent of your injury. So based on this i think you should first get your strength back before you ride because i think you will find that your wrist will hold up fine but because of the atraphy of being in a cast for a long time. your so called "guns" wont be there and you will have arm pump before you get 100 feet on the trail.

I know this is late but kingofthewoods makes a great point. If you get on too soon and the muscles around your injury are weak you may end up going down doing something routine, reinjuring yourself. I also have a plate on the left wrist, this week marked a year since I broke both, I started riding about five months after. Did the therapy but since it was so bad the doctor said 50-75% of the movement was all I could expect. As for the brace issue, I don't like any of the fitted types because the bones in my arm are not where they used to be and it makes it pretty uncomfortable. I just use an evs wrap that has a stiff pad on the outside, probably won't help in a crash but mentally it is reassuring. So far so good, had a few hard landings but no get offs which required me to land on the ground with my hands out, guess that will be the true test.

Broke mine about 15 years ago on a street bike, also tore the tendon that moves the hand up and down. Doc said i would never move the wrist again let alone ride.

I had to take a year and a half off riding since i also broke my pelvis and a few other things and was out of work for a while. An old famliy doc told me to put my hands against a wall and lean into it so i would flex my wrist. After a while i started getting a lot of movement, now i got about 80% back.

When i started riding again i tried several different braces, they all seemed to hinder more than help. Took about another year of riding before the wrist felt good again.

I broke my Radius and Ulna right there back in 1980 or 81 and they set it without any internal fixators.

I've got nothing for good braces, but as far as anti-vibration they make a handlebar where the part you hold is isolated from the part that goes in the bar clamp with polyurethane bushings. Never used it though. I would wait and see if the vibration bothers you. Most people are fine without it.
