Numb fingers? Have you had hand surgery? - UPDATE

    by befree » Sun Mar 23, 2008 11:06 pm

The docs are recommending it for my husband. He has bad numbing in the last three fingers, and the specialist says a surgery similar to carpal tunnel will bring the feeling back. He's got significant impingement in the ulnar nerve.

Docs say he will be 95 - 100% after healing. But two people I've talked to that had carpal tunnel surgery say you lose strength in your hand afterward. He'd rather deal with numb fingers than a weak hand. Anyone have this done, and what was the outcome?

    Thanks,
    Barb

    Hey Barb,

I don't know about the surgury your talking about but, I have the exact same problem secondary to a badley broken wrist years ago. I found that using a TENS unit, (Transcutaneous Electronic Nerve stimulator) 3x a week on the affected arm really really helps withthis problem. You can find one of these units usually at a Chiro office. Or at the very least he or she could point you in the right direction. Anything is better that "SURGURY" :D

Thanks for the response. I agree with you - we are generally against resorting to surgery, BUT... he had the surgery done three weeks ago today.

I'm very happy to report that there's already been improvement. The doc removed what he referred to as a HUGE ganglion in his wrist that had been pressing hard on the nerve for a couple of years, hence the lost mobility and muscle mass.

The splint is off and now that we can see it, the 5" scar from the center of his palm up his wrist is really ugly. But he can already feel more in his fingers and move them in ways he couldn't before. He had lost a lot of use of his hand (fine motor skills).

With a couple of months of PT and building back lost muscle, I think this is going to be a 100% success. Whew!!
