    dislocated shoulder

    by fatbasser » Sat Apr 28, 2007 10:46 pm

hey guys i hope everyone is in good health. today i was riding a couple of sand pits. as i was packing up i went to push my bike up a little hill to get to the truck when i sliped and dislocated my shouler. the mos pain i have ever felt. they had to put me to sleep in order to get it back in. has anyone had this happen to them, roughly how long should i wear the sling and will i beable to ride hard again. it hurt more than when i shattered my ankle back in 1999. the funny thing is last saturday i lauched my wifes yz80 and bailed hard with no gear on and scrapped my knee, needed 12 stiches
i pray to god that it wont happen again.
what kind of exercise should i do and when should i start in 1 to 2 weeks or more

It's hurst like hell when you do it, but dislocation heal fairly quick. You can probably start using it in about 1-2 weeks, but I would keep it light for quite a while, at least a month. Don't stretch it right away either.
The things that really sucks is once you pop your shoulder out, it gets easier and easier to do it again.
Once it feels good and strong do some weights and build the muscle up.

hey bigd thanks alot for the encouragement. the doctor said that if it happens again that i will need surgery. i hope that i will beable to ride again like i used to without being scared of bailing. that was the most pain i have ever felt in my life and dont want to experience it ever again.
    thanks alot, steve

The fear will go away with a couple twists of the throttle......
No worry though, you'll bounce back just fine!

I dislocated mine a few years ago on a double.
the doctor kept it strapped up for 2 weeks and then I was allowed to exercise it. I suggest that after 2 weeks you get an MRI scan to check the ligaments and rotator cuff, these are small muscles that balance the shoulder and stop it popping out. If they ok then get a sports physio to show you how to do rotator cuff exercises using an exercise band. Do them on both shoulders! Unfortunately I needed keyhole surgery....but I was exercising it a week later!
All dirt bike riders should do these exercises they balance the shoulders and make them more resistant to dislocation. If you do heavy weights in the gym then your shoulders will be strong but easy to dislocate.
You will be fine...i was watching X games a few years ago and this young guy was competing against mcgrath in a step up jump contest, his shoulder came out, he put it back in put ice on it and carried on riding! mcgrath still won!
    wish you a speedy recovery...

i just did mine 3 weeks ago but i hit a tree after it was dislocated and drove my humorous back into the socket and shattered the ball on my humorous and knocked three chips out of the socket and ripped 94% of my rotor cuff and tore almost every ligament and tendon connected from elbow to shoulder. the first 25 minutes stuck under my bike was bad but the six miles out of the woods on the back of my buddies 450R was worse. the 5 miles of pavement cheating our way back to the truck sucked too. next to the time i broke my back and neck it was the worst pain i have felt. thank god for good friends who will jog 6 miles down the trail to fix and ride your bike out. oh and every bike i own will have bark busters from now on because the right bar was stuck about 2 inches under my throat the whole time i was stuck under the bike, if there was no buster i think the bar would have stabbed my chest or ripped my throat out. at least my 450 owned 2 pine trees before it cut 2 inches into the one that stopped me. 6 to 8 months after they do the surgery in a week or so. but i figure when my arm will reach the bars i'm game. lesson learned, 3rd gear is to fast and front tire needs to be on the ground when avoiding a wash lol all that and i still lost our grudge scramble. oh yea, Ken, can i have a free kill switch, only part i need lol
