I came across this forum today, and decided to join. Heres my question: is there any difference in performance, horse power, torque etc. between CRF250x and CRF250r?

I had an 04 250F. So much lighter than the X. Not as many goodies but way lighter feeling and they handle like a dream.

Major Differences!

they are way different i currently bought the 2007 crf 250 R and when i compared them first off teh X has a light/lights 2nd thing is that it is 25 punds heavier and that it is geared differently for more trail riding, 3rd it has a 2.5 pound gas tank which will add to the weight and slow the bike down, it also the CRF 250 R is a all arround track bike if you want torque, power, acceleration, control, and a light bike , deffinatly go with the CRF 250 R (the x is for trail riders only) if you want to get the X and convert it and take off electric start and change out light buy new front plate get the smaller gas tank and tune the bike go ahead! but all arrround the CRF 250 R is a better bike for all those reasons~Colton :D

I don't know if you can say that one bike is better than the other.. They both are good bikes...

But you could choose the bike based on what you want it for..
If what you want it for is track riding mainly and some trails then go for the R

I you want to ride trials, baja, and some track then go for the X

Again, it all depends on what you want to ride, I personally own X because don't do tracks, I ride mostly trails...

True Dat!

The R only excels on the track. The X kicks its rear elsewhere.

In one of my riding groups there are both. The dads on on the 250X, the kids (17 and 19) are on the 250R. The R guys are always stalling, which involves backing down the hill, or otherwise positioning the bike so it is stable enough to kick. This gets tricky because you also have to bear in mind the line you are set up for once you are started again. The button and gearing make life on the trails so much easier. Track time, however, is almost embarrassing on the X!

I think you will find volumes on this if you bother to do a search on the subject.

i have an 04' X that i race hare scrambles with and have been very happy with it. I have made it look like an R and tried to make it preform like an R with a cam pipe, and the usual opening up, but my buddy on his 250F still blows me out of the water on the straights. When the 2008 250R comes out ill be getting that and converting it to my race bike for for its light weight and a little more power. If i was to do it all over again i would have gotten the r and put a bigger tank and suspsnsion work to make it woods friendly. As far as the magic button, im young(16) ill deal with it.

In short i would go with the R

tolyaRR,
Welcome to the group. I too have a 250X with many mods, performance and appearance. My bike looks like an R and I am frequently questioned at the gate of the local OHV Park during GREEN STICKER season. I have lightened the bike with many of the appearance mods so I do not think that the weight difference is a real issue. My performance mods have made it run similar to an R from the bottom to the top end. The biggest difference is in the gear box. The R's closer ratio gear box allows it to get to high gear sooner. Mine, with the cam and pink wire mod along with the JD kit, associated breathing improvements and drive gearing changes, I would say, is pretty competative. That is comparing mine to a box stock 250R. (I have ridden both bikes).
Having said this there are several things to consider before purchasing one over the other.
You live in California=Great weather year round for riding. X=green sticker=ride all year.
What type of riding are you planning to do? Track vs trails. The X with modification can give you the best of both worlds. If you are sure you don't want to ride anything but track: go R. BUT don't go crying when your bud with an X wants you to go riding at the local OHV park, Georgetown or Stonyford or Foresthill from April thru early October and you can't go cause you wanted a bike that got to 5th gear a little sooner and was a few pounds lighter. I personally wanted the options. I have ridden on an MX track and for my age and skill level my 250X in R's clothing suits me jut fine.
Don't count out the button just because your friends may want to call you a lightweight. That all changes when they stall there hot bike and have to kick start it.
R triple clamps on E bay .... $35.00
Acerbis number plate .... $20.00
Performance Mods (about).... $650.00
Stopping alongside my R riding friend trying to kick start his lathered up steed, killing my X, pushing the button and motoring away ... Priceless
Believe me the botton is worth the trade off in weight.
Being able to ride virtually when and where you want is worth the trade in stock performance R vs X. Again Race Only: R. Anything else: X
Just my opinion,
O.D.

It cannot be stated any clearer than that.

Oh, and new intake valves every 600 miles roughly, for the "R".

If you are still Watching this forum. Let me put in my 2 cents.

I ride a crf250r 04, my buddy, an 05 crf250x. We ride Mark Twain National forest near Springfield Mo. My 250 has 1 mod, that helps with the type of riding we do. The front sprocket is down 1 tooth from stock.

The place we ride, has a lot of everything. Open trails, fire roads, and rocky hills, etc, etc.

After riding my 250r down their I would ride nothing else. It has plenty of torque to climb the rocks and hills that we climb. Which all things considered, are fairly steep. My bud on the 250x, has a little more torque than I do, and yes does have the electric start, which is nice, if you happen to kill it. Happens once in a while, but not very often. usually operator error....

But everyone else, tight trails, fire roads, open areas, etc, etc. I can leave him in the dust when ever I want It's nice having that extra power the 250r has over the 250x. I am a little more aggressive of a rider than my friend. So maybe this can help you make your decision.

It's easier to make the R trail worthy than the X track worthy. Go for the R

The R is great on everything for the sort of trail riding that i do. Its great to have that power to smoke everyone. THe only thing is a BIGGER FUEL TANK i run out of juice to quick. But after that one hell of a good all round bike. :)
