Can someone tell me why 4-stroke exhausts systems are so expensive? I remember not too long ago paying $220 for a Bill's pipe and silencer for my KX 125.
In the new TWMX the Pro Circuit ad has 4-stroke silencers for $399.95-$474.95, next to those are the very similar looking 2-stroke silencers for $119.95-$159.95. Four times the price? Why? I sure aint gonna pay it. Sure titanium is expensive, bla bla bla. These appear to be made from the same material, by the same people, so why the price hike?
If a company came out with a reasonably priced system for 4-strokes they'd make a killing in profit.
Todays bikes have FAR better stock power than the most hopped up bikes from a few years ago. Those who think they NEED a $1,200 carbon / ti system in order to win the Old Timer Beginner class at Chicken Licks need to re-evaluate their riding skills.
Did anyone catch the story in a recent Dirt Rider where one of the editors raced against Ryan Hughes as Hughes kept switching to progressively slower bikes so that the editor on his hopped up RMZ 450 would have a chance to beat him? Hughes used momentum and skill to carry his speed all the way around the track to beat the hopped up RMZ 450 on a bone stock DRZ 110 that was down about 50hp.
Sure, there are top pros who can use the power, and rich wannabe's who like to look cool, but what about us real hardworking average racer dudes who just want to replace our dented up stock silencer? There is no reason in the world why there can not be a nice $200 silencer imported from Taiwan or a whole system for under $400.
I work for a high-end mountain bike company with ties to a popular MX accesory company, where we both weld and fabricate our frames in house, as well as import from Taiwan. I know what stuff actually costs and what goes into producing parts.
What are you guy's thoughts?
