Hi, I just recently bought a 2013 CRF230F. I bought it from my brother and he was the original owner. I was confident in buying from him because I know he take care of his stuff. I didn’t realize I was buying a motorcycle that was meant for someone who is 80-100 lbs smaller than I am. I purchased my first upgrade for it today. I bought a BBR spring for the rear that’s supposed to be 30% stiffer then the stock one. I’m also eyeing some new springs for the forks. I’m looking at some from BBR and also Eibach. I want to see how the rear spring changes the ride before moving on. I was also eyeing a new shock/spring combo with an external reservoir, but it was a little over $600 more than the spring I bought so I decided to go the cheaper route first. I will be riding mostly dirt roads and trails with various levels of road quality. I also might putt around or drive it like I stole it or somewhere in between those two points.

My next purchase for it should be a clymer manual. I’m not sure if I’ll do new springs in the forks or send them off this winter for someone else to work their magic on them. I’m here now hoping to get some input from people more knowledgeable about this than I am that can help me with some info so I can decide which direction to go in.

I also plan to rejet the carb, remove the snorkel from the air box and a new exhaust system or at least remove the baffle from the stock one. I then want to put a 14t sprocket on the front and a 48t in the rear.

Any positive input will be appreciated.

I did forget to post a pic of the bike. It was taken during a quick stop during a ride.

I did pull the trigger tonight and ordered the service manual. While I was at it I got a couple JT sprockets, 14T and 48T. I also got the power up needle. Apparently they’ve gotten quite expensive compared to the prices I’ve read people give on the forums. I managed to find one on eBay for $25. I saw some online for up to a little over $40. Now I just need to get the jets I need.

Hi NevadaMike and welcome to the site.
The workshop manual will be the best money you ever spend.

Once you have fitted the rear spring you will need to adjust the sag level to get it right for your weight and the new spring.

For the front end google Bruce Triplett damper rod modifications. You will have to send him your ones and he will need to know your riding weight.

There are two schools of thought with jetting.
Using the earlier needle with the 120 main jet and 45 idle or the power up with a 132 main jet. Either works it just depends on riding style. The taper on the standard needle is hard to beat though. The power up needle I feel was designed to get you up in the revs and then work at its best.

I wouldn't cut the airbox just remove the snorkel part and leave the rubber around the airbox edge. You are suppose to remove baffle, not spark arrestor when doing the rejet. If you ride where noise is not appreciated then a different approach with the baffle is needed.

There a great little bike as long as you don't treat it like an MX or enduro bike.
They are a good woods bike and can do single track well.
