Crankcase damaged - Is it salvageable?

    by 2005Hondacrf250r » Wed Dec 30, 2020 8:08 pm

My 2005 250R seized up on me and there was gold shavings in the oil so I ordered a hot rods bottom end kit knowing that it needed a full rebuild. When I split the cases I noticed that there are grooves in the case where the crank sits and I am wondering if it is safe to sand these spots slightly and re-use it or just leave it alone and use the way it is or have to buy a new case half? Thanks In advance for any input! Joe

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

As long as there are no burrs sticking up to catch on something , you are fine , yes you can sand it by hand ( or use a Dremel with a sanding wheel) , and get any burrs off it , and it should be good to go .... ;)

I have sanded cases with similar marks .....

Agree with Jim. Clean it up and inspect it to make sure that they are just surface scratches. Good to go.

Thanks guys for the quick replies and info! I’ll give it a light sanding for the burrs and put it back together. I’ve used this site a good bit for other projects and I usually always found my answers in the forums without having to ask. Thanks again and have a happy new year!
