    Modding for Moab - CRF250L

    by BigBert » Mon Apr 27, 2020 10:12 pm

    Hi, I am looking for suggestions for modding my CRF250l for Moab. Mods I have been recommend: new tires, 13/42 front/rear sprocket, spark arrestor removal. drilled air box and EJK chip.

    I have heard feedback that a drilled airbox in the desert is not a great mod due to sand. Any and all feedback or recommendations appreciated. Thanks!

    Welcome to the site !! \:D/

    I am not sure I would recommend removing the Spark Arrestor ... most any off-road parks or areas require the use of them , and it is not really going to gain anything , the baffle restriction , ok , but not the S/A

    As far as mods , I guess the question would be , what are your plans ?? , are you going to go and camp in far off areas ?? , or stick to main roads/trails ?? , are you going to be riding nasty single track sketchy trails ?? , or sticking to main roads and trails ?? , are you going to be riding alone ?? , or with a group ?? .......

    You may possibly want a rack to carry items with you whether it be extra gas , or food or whatever , a rack makes it nice and keeps whatever you need secure ..... I would also recommend some type of pack with tools in case of breakdown , a tube in case of a flat , you can get 1 tube for the larger diameter wheel and if needed you can still stuff it in the smaller wheel , so 1 tube will work for both wheels , and either a Crescent wrench , or the premade Wrench/tire iron so if needed you can remove the wheel for a flat and have a iron to remove the tire/tube for repair or replacement , you can get them in the size of your axle nuts and they take minimal space and are usually aluminum so they won't weigh your pack down ......and make a way to carry plenty of water to drink , just in case you get stranded by maybe stacking a couple hydration bladders in your backpack ........

    It all depends on how far off-road you plan on going , and how long you plan to stay ....being over prepared is much better than being underprepared

    Power doesn't do much for you in Moab. Low end grunt, the ability to lift the front wheel quickly and crawl slowly, as in low low gearing, are more important.
    Also, Moab eats tires, and a super worn rear actually performs better than a new tire.

    @JimDirt

    I plan on going offroad a lot. atleast 70%-80% of the time. My goals with this bike are mainly overnight trips in the surrounding backcountry and the hut to hut trips and camping in the 14'ners of Colorado.

    Upgrades I just invested in;
    13/42 sprocket setup
    Larger rear rack
    Denali Sound Bomb horn
    2x1L gas bottles

    Things I am also considering to get the most out of things:
    Upgraded LED accessory lights for riding at night - This place is getting hot!
    FMF powerbomb header/exhaust/EJK - I am not sold on this idea just yet as I dont know if it is worth the extra money.

    P.S. Thanks for all the advice Leardriver and JimDirt
