CRF150F Suspension Set Up for Heavy Rider

    by MacJohn10 » Sat Apr 18, 2020 7:29 am

    Hi all,

I have a 2004 crf150f that I got new when I was a kid and everything is stock.

I've recently gotten back into riding, but I'm a bit heavier now. Any suggestions on how I should go about setting up the suspension for trail riding? New shock/springs, heavier fork oil, rear shock adjustment, etc?

    I'm 5'10, 200lbs.

    Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

You are going to have a tough time finding springs to fit your weight for that bike ...... What your best bet would be is contact BBR , as they are the only one's I know of that make a shock spring for your bike for "adults" , though I do not know if they offer specific weight rider springs , or just 1 option ... but they have fork and shock springs for your bike ........

    https://bbrmotorsports.com/Products/Products.aspx

Race Tech does offer fork springs for your weight , but not for the shock .......

So that would be your best bet is to call them , or other Suspension companies , like Factory Connection , or Pro Circuit , and see if they can offer any resource or info as to where to get them The rate you would need for your weight would be 0.40 fork and 8.96 shock , or as close as you can get ........ if you were to get a larger bike , like a 250X then your spring rate would need to be 0.43 fork and 5.7 shock (different kind of spring for these bikes than the 150 , hence the different rates)

The only other option would be to get a larger bike that correct springs for your weight would be more readily available , like a 250X (if you wanted to remain with Honda) , which is what I feel would be the better option , as modifying the 150 is going to be a struggle to get it to work properly ..... you could ride it as is , but I am sure it would not be the best ride ..... if you weighed 150 , it would not be so much of a issue (I weigh about what you do (between 200-205) , and I have to run stiffer springs even on my 450's , unfortunately , none of these bike from the factory were designed for guys of our weight .. so we have to find the best solution , which usually means buying stuff regular size guys don't need , or a bigger bike ...... :(

As Jim said - those are the places to check. Back when "Pit Bikes" were the rage BBR was the place that had all the stuff for full sized people on kids bikes.

Personally - I think you should consider a bigger bike with your size. Maybe a CRF230 or Yamaha TW200. Both great bikes that full sized people can have a lot of fun on and not too intimidating. Both bullet proof quality units.

    Hi MacJohn10,
Even if you change bikes unless someone set the suspension up for someone in your weight range you will probably have to change springs.
Fact of life with most bikes (even new) unless you happen to suit the springs they designed them with.
Still, having the springs to suit the rider is best bang for buck to make your ride better.
