We had a little scare today , 6.5 quake in Idaho ...

    by JimDirt » Tue Mar 31, 2020 8:45 pm

Freaked me out , I have lived here over 30 years and never experienced one here , I guess they had one in early 80's in the same location as this one (in Challis , Id , about 90 miles from where I am) , I guess on the 18th of March , just a couple weeks ago , they also had a similar one in Salt Lake city that was around 5.7 .... Hopefully this does not mean Yellowstone is going to erupt soon .... don't need that on top of all this virus stuff .....

I was in the California one on February 9th 1971 (I was 10 at the time) that was similar in size , and lived close to the epicenter , that was way scarier than this one ... but this one freaked me out the same .. with this one I had just sat down at my PC and my chair started moving ,literally right when I sat down , it felt weird , so I got up and walked into the kitchen and was looking out the kitchen window at the animals , then the next one came , and the house started swaying like you were standing in a rowboat in rough water or something .... then there was one more small one , each lasted about 20 or 30 seconds .....

Anyway , thought I would share .... I hate quakes ... I thought living here that was the last thing I would need to worry about ..... hopefully that was it for the next 30 years ........ 8-[

    Update: 10 pm news

They just announced on our local news they did have a similar size one in Yellowstone earlier today , not long before the one we had here , the Seismologist said they were each on a different fault , so not sure what that does as far as linking them or not , as that could be a good thing , but it is strange that 3 different faults all slipped so close together in time , they said it was felt across 7 states and up into Alberta Canada ... so it was fairly significant .....

Heard the news last night about your quake. The earths plates are shifting and there is going to be a significant plate slide one of these days. The experts have been saying that a catastrophic event is past due. Not much people can do about it - The earth is in rearrangement of the crust plates regardless of what we want or think.
My friend in NV had a pretty good shaker a week or so ago. I bet he felt the quake last night also.

    Rock & roll Jim.

Yep ...Like Red Fox used to say , "I think this is the big one !!"

My concern is Yellowstone ... I know the chances are slim , but .......... that does not mean it can't happen , the statistics if the volcano does erupt is , it is going to pretty much wipe out the west coast far greater than Mount St. Helens did with ash , and I am in the RED zone where it is predicted the most devastation would be experienced .... 8-[

Anyway , so far no aftershocks felt here , they had dozens of them in the immediate area of the quake , but it is so sparsely populated that the damage was minimal considering the size of the quake .... Hopefully that is the last of it .... [-oo

Bob who is a member here said he did not feel anything down where he lives in the Reno NV area.

Things are sliding down under us all over the world. It's been happening for 5 billion years and will continue to. I read a really good book a few years ago about the history and evolution of earth. Really summed up the changes going on now and before.

Out of our control - so there is no sense getting to wound up about it. We have plenty to worry about right now and it is something we can try to get control of.

No damages, no injuries - sounds like you did pretty good Jim.

Yea , I agree ..... Also this was nothing like the 1971 quake that killed some of our family friends , that I was in when I was about 10 , that was severe devastation that I saw first hand .... My only worry with this one is the chance (however slight) that Yellowstone decides to throw up all over the southwest ...... Mount St Helens was like this quake we just had comparatively to what it can do if it blows ..... the shaking I can deal with , I can just get on my bike and I won't feel any of it ..... it just makes me nervous that's all .... even though there is absolutely nothing I can do about it happening if it does .... 8-[

I am sure I will forget all about it soon ....and go back to normal worrying about all the other things in life I can't control .... I guess I just was not expecting this .... That's all ..... Shows how little we control what happens around us .... :(

Well Jim look at the bright side, you are back posting pretty soon afterwards.
Pretty scary though, but bar moving to somewhere else what can you do other than have a stout table in the kitchen.

With this virus thing I moved out of our house and moved to my parents old farm.
They have both pasted away so I have been making it liveable again.
We decided to isolate me early due to the heart issues so I have been down here 4 weeks.

The wife is definitely missing me cooking she reckons what she makes tastes like sh17.
    Spoilt her I have.

No bikes to work on down here so it is cleaning house and removing snakes and bats and other creatures.
    yes Neil it is boring.

    Stay safe guys.

Wow Ray, 4 weeks total isolation. That would be tough. At lest there are critters to keep you with things to do.

Here where I live there has been very little impact from the virus other than the schools all closed. It's kind of strange and eerie feeling when we do go to the store for groceries. There is just strange feeling you can see in everyone's eyes. Normally people here are very friendly and incredibly courteous. Now everyone just walks through the store and act like it's forbidden to talk. Also the neighbors that normally work or staying home all day. There are two doctors in the neighborhood that both have been putting in very longer hours at the hospital. That must be rough.
I can still go into the forest for rides or street rides. I have a really nice shop that I spend quite a bit of time tinkering around in.
We have been just laying low as they say. It appears to me that this is going to go on considerably longer than I originally thought.
This is going to go down in history as one of the worlds worst encounters. Maybe it will be good for the planet to know at times like this we are all in this mess together.
All you can do is try to do your part to stop this virus spread.

    Hang in there everyone.
Ray, try not to go crazy and the best of luck for you and your family.

Yea Ray , I have the same concerns due to my heart and lung issues , which put me in the "high risk" category as well , I have been staying home and away from people for the most part as well , which I live 10 miles from town and no close neighbors , and I have plenty to do around here in between storms , I did not ride last weekend partly due to the weather , but I may try to ride this Saturday , but not sure yet ..... I do need to get some groceries with the limited supplies the store have , eggs seem to be as coveted as toilet paper around here , which I don't get , I bought my usual 12 rolls at the beginning of the month and I am only 1/4 thru them and I have stomach issues so I rely on it quite often , and I still have enough for a few more weeks , so I do not understand people buying 20 cases of the stuff unless they are in a house full of girls ... which is why there are none on the shelves now ....... :(

The owners of the property I take care of and live at , are here (they live in Malibu ,Calif. but are from France) and they have been holding up here , as Calif. is pretty much on lockdown , they have been here for the last few weeks , as they came up for the weekend and the lockdown happened at home , so they are waiting till things calm down in Calif. before they head back , they had to cancel their trips to Africa and their 1 month stay in France in Aug. .... so this is new for them as well , I think this is the longest they have stayed here since I have been here , which is going on 8 years , it is affecting everyone to some extent or another ....... , we are on a stay at home order , but not restricted to lockdown , just use caution and stay away from others as much as possible , but still enjoy the outdoors , but the tracks here are closed , but the motorcycle park where I ride is not , at least not for now ... The woods are open but campgrounds are not , so you can ride trails , just not camp in a designated campground ...................

I think I would rather put up with earthquakes over this virus stuff though , it definitely makes life difficult , but as long as we don't start seeing Zombies everywhere , it will get better , though if we do , I should have enough ammo and guns to hold me over for a bit ... 8-[ .....

I wish both of you the very best!

What kind of shook me up a little is when this first came up it looked to be just the elderly and mainly people with health issues. Being 60 I thought - Ok I'm in good health and should not have to worry much. But it has become apparent that is not the case. Here in SD on we had our second death yesterday from the virus. A 51 year old healthy third grade school teacher. She was in perfect health and not even overweight. She got sick and was died three days later.
That was an eye opener to just how dangerous this virus is.

Jim funny how you brought up zombies. I was thinking the other day of how this could turn into the walking dead series. Of course without the walkers.

    Stay healthy guys.

Yea , that is what is so scary about it , I guess a newborn just died from it as well , so it's not being choosy anymore , I think as it spreads , it mutates a bit , and the fact that no 2 people have the same symptoms or severity , as well as someone can have it for 2 weeks and no one knows , so however many people they are in contact with during that time can all be infected without knowing anyone was carrying it ..... I am also thinking the ones that did test positive but were not sick are most likely carriers , kind of like Typhoid Mary , she never got sick and infected like 50 people and a few of them died  , that is the scary part , just because someone looks fine walking around in the store , does not mean everything they touched is not contaminated ...... 8-[

All I know is , if people that have recently died from this , start getting up , then I won't be answering my door out here in the middle of nowhere if someone starts knocking unexpectedly , but if I do , I will just send them to the neighbors first .... [-oo

I have been telling people for a decade or more that the world is overdue for a pandemic.
It is mother natures way of having a cull.
Imagine is you got rid of 30% of the worlds population, the CO2 and pollution levels would drop bringing the planet back into balance.

The scary thing is either bird flu or swine flu (can't remember which) was far deadly but luckily it was identified early and stopped.

If people just keep there damm distance and stop moaning for 2 weeks when quarantined in a nice hotel room, we will get through this.
Yes Neil it is going to take some time to get it down to no new cases and it burns itself out.
Economically it might take decades for all governments to recover.

People just need to be nice to each other, maintain distance but still wave and say Hi.
Mind, we have fools at the supermarket when my wife was last there who were right in your face.
It is all good they think, till it happens to them or someone they care about.
People need to take it seriously.

My guns and bikes are at home with the wife but if it goes real bad we will pack up everything and move bush.

    Stay safe have fun.
