Wheel Build - Talon Pro Billet Hubs / Excel Rims / Bulldog Spokes CRF450R

    by andytaylor9991 » Wed Jan 29, 2020 9:09 am

New to the forum, fae Bonnie Scotland, fit like?

Just thought I'd write a script for anyone else struggling to get parts together for a wheel build. Might help someone source parts and/or save some money.

So... in my infinite wisdom, after speaking to the local machine shop and him quoting me £100 to weld and drill a trashed rear hub (Wee brother (Obviously not me [-X ) - Tight Chain - Ripped Off Sprocket - Broken lug & stretched holes on the rest), I had a look on eBay and got a pair of second hand Talon Pro Billets for the same price

What a win right? Nope... This numpty never realised that the excels on the bike only have 32H holes and the Talon hubs have 36H holes.. Ok.. no problem... :? Back to the bay of E and got myself a pair of second hand excel rims with 36H and the correct drilling pattern.

Now for the spokes \:D/ I just couldn't find any off the shelf kits for this set-up which resulted in HOURS of searching ](*,) Any spoke builder I emailed (I think almost every one on google in the UK) needed spoke dimensions and could I find them? [-X The wheel builders I contacted just seemed pretty miffed that I wouldn't send them the parts / give them business other than spoke sales.

Talon wanted £222 total for front and rear GALVANISED STEEL spoke sets (With anodised nipples) [-(
    753DSPK - £69.21 + VAT for the 21” by 1.60
    647PSPK - £69.21 + VAT for the 19” by 2.15

Central Wheel Components / SMPro wanted £188 for Bulldog STAINLESS STEEL (With anodised nipples)
7010057 - £50 with VAT for the Front set
7010058 - £50 with VAT for the Rear set.
Anodised Nipples were £40 for a pack of £36, I'm sure I could've saved money here but I thought bulldog spokes needed they're own type of nipples? By the way, for the front he gave me 9G nipples and the rear 8G, he assures me that's the way they build the same set-up.

Tidy wee saving for nicer kit as a bonus yet the total is mounting up!

In comes delivery of the hubs.. oh poo... NO SPACERS    ](*,) =DD

Sarah from Talon was amazingly helpful ([email protected]) with any queries I had regarding the hubs/spokes and even after I went to SMPro for the spoke set (after bombarding her with questions for the best part of a day!), she was glad to help and I got new centre tubes and spacers for both hubs for £37 delivered!

There was a win in there for me as I'd nearly paid some chancer on eBay £63 for just front and rear spacers! Yes that's you ninjamonkey ya wee rip-off merchant!

Dominic from CWC/SMPro ([email protected]) was a massive help when it came to ordering the spokes, I'd recommend emailing or calling them rather than ordering through the site to avoid getting the wrong spokes as there was no option for Talon hubs. He tells me that the SMPro hubs use the same drilling pattern as Talon.

So yeah, fair wee novel but hopefully it helps someone, just waiting for all the parts to arrive then it's time to build some shiny(ish) new wheels  \:D/ :P

Just DO NOT do what I done if you're not willing to spend over £400! :-({|= I'm sure some of you will point out that I could have got bits cheaper here and there, that will be good for others reading this but for me.. too late :(

And yeah... before you say it.. We all know how many trolls live on forums! I coulda had a brand new wheel set for same price but without the same build quality in the parts. The second hand hubs and rims won't look brand new either but neither does my 2008 CRF450R, they'll just get worse the way I treat Gertrude anyway  And I'll get the satisfaction of building and truing my own wheels, I love that kinda stuff haha!

P.S. I've never built a wheel in ma puff! :-k On the plus side... I'll have a spare set of wheels once I fork out for a second hand rear hub... anyone selling?

    That's quite a story and adventure. ](*,)
Just so happens we have an expert wheel builder here that I am sure will chime in. He can build a wheel while riding the bike at the same time and do it in minutes. He's amazing. :^o

    Neil,
I pretty sure he didn't say while he was riding the bike.

I like the wire rack. Pretty slick. Beats my plastic tube with rolls thrown in it.

I have a plastic box with various reels and bags of wire plus crimping tools for wire up to 16 sqmm. Just trying to keep dust and moisture off the copper.
