    Type of Coolant and oil

    by Benneb2 » Mon Aug 06, 2018 12:36 pm

Hi everyone, new to the motorcross, coolant... Should I buy a high end one such as Putolene or Silkolene or is a normal cheap coolant okay as long as its okay for crf250x ?

Also manual says 10w-30 for both engine and trany should I stick with manual or go for a 10w-40?

    Thank you

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

Oil is kind of your choice as far as viscosity , you can run 0w-30 , up to 10w-40 and be just fine , depending on your temperatures and riding conditions .... , that said...... what most of us run is 10w-40 , i personally use Synthetic (full not Syn-blend) , just make sure whatever oil you get it meets the JASO T-903 Standard standards and for Wet Clutch usually a MA type oil , , make sure it does not have Molybdenum additives they will make a wet clutch slip ...

As far as coolant , you are open to preference there as well , i personally use Engine Ice and love it , but you can run Motul , or ANY Motorcycle Specific coolant , do not run the same stuff you put in your car , and do not mix brands or types of coolant , you will need to flush your system with Distilled Water , to get all of the remaining old coolant out unless you are certain you are using the same coolant that was used before

Hope that helped some .... ;)

Your filter is a insert type not a screw on , it usually comes in paper (surrounded by metal at each end) , they do make metal equivalents , but most of us do not feel they are fine enough to be worth the effort to clean and reuse , and the paper ones are fairly cheap , your local dealer should have various brands as well

Your filter is located behind the round plug with 2 bolts holding it on the front left (ignition cover) side of the engine , your oil drain bolts are located down at the bottom of the ignition cover right at the lower corner , signified by a larger bolt than all the other case bolts , the transmission drain is located just behind it in the recess behind the sprocket using the same size bolt , the oil fill for engine is the plug in the top of the ignition cover and the transmission fill is located on the clutch side with the same type of plug at the top of the cover .... ;)

This is the type filter you need: (this is a pack of 6 filters for the price shown)

This is one of the stainless filters that are reusable:
